I have a '99 Dakota, 5.2 V8 Club Cab, and I'm starting to get Rattling under the Chassis, I thought that the Transmission not shifting was destroying teh Engine, but if it's actually the Catalytic Converter, I may be able to fix that.

Is it true that it is covered up to 80000 miles? If so, I'm 300 miles short of that, I need to go in and get that taken care of. How difficult is that to do? I got it at a Ford Dealership(No Dodge dealers worth mentioning in my Area), so would they be able to do it, or would I have to take it all teh way to a Dodge Dealer?

Dodge dealer its dodge warranty not fords.
Just tell them your cat is screwy theyll check and replace it the 80k warranty is federal mandated.

You might be able to get a chrysler/jeep dealership to do it if a dodge one is over 50miles away

Just had my 1999 Dak to have the Cat replaced. Dealer did it in less than 4 hours. No problems.

Got 80,000 miles on mine and it's got the squeaks. I think it is coming from the upper ball joint on the passenger side. It squeaks when i turn the wheel and when bouncing up and down. Sprayed a little CRC silicone on it, and it got quiter for about 2 weeks, now it's back louder than ever.

I'm thinkin' about takin that ball joint loose, cleaning it with some type spray, then spray with CRC white lithium grease. Does anyone know if those ball joints have a nylon insert or bushing? I know I'll have to consider that a petroleum product may break-down some synthetic materials!

You might also drain and clean the rear differential, then refill it with new fluid. The rear axle speed sensor can sometimes become contaminated by metallic particles from normal use in the fluid. Just a guess, but I think these particles can affect the magnetic properties of the sensor and cause poor performance.

I have a 200o R/T Dakota and there is a recall on the upper ball joints for the Dakota and Durango just been issued this month12/2004. I have also have problems with tthe uppper control arm bushings and the lower bushings as well. The truck only has 48k on it and the upper bushings are coming apart. I am a ASE master tech and never really seen anyhting wear out so fast on a stock vehicle. Secondly i too have been having problems with the transmission. The front pump whines when the vehicle is started up cold and is slow to go into gear the first time you try to engage it when cold. It also is slow to shift in between 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th, i believe this is due to a lack of main line pressure caused from a weak front pump. This vehicle has never been used to haul anything and is well cared for. Upon some research i have found out that the trans used in the v-8 models is inherently weak and is basically problematic. I took the truck in several times for the noise in the trans and they basically put some additive in the trans to quite it down and said no problem found, until the warranty ran out then they knew what the problem was. Now when it is cold it slips when you fist put it into gear. This is a trans with 48k and has been serviced every 20k. I have had a multitude of little problems nothing serious but stuff like the drivers window regulator makes weird noises, and all four of the speakers in the infinity stereo/cd sytem have failed. I went ahead and replaced the speakers with some nicer infinity reference series speakers, at a cost of 200$ for the front and 100$ for the rears. This did not include the laborsince i did the install my self. I like the truck but i believe that Dodge really needs to come clean and recall the upper and lower control arms and bushings on these vehicles, because honestly this is ridiculous. Ive put three sets of tires on it since it was new and it has never held an alignment properly(and i am not a hotrodder his truck is stock and driven very conservatively) Let me know if your feeling the way i do!

I agree with the guy who has the 2000o R/T Dakota, because I have had the SAME thing happen on my Dakota. I have had it with this truck I'm so ready just to junk it, but it's all I can do right now. What can we do? Is there somewhere we can all get together to make them fix it for free. I sure can't afford it right now, nor can I afford to be out of a truck.

I have a 99 dakota with 67k since I have gotten it I have replaced ball joints on both front tires, AC compressor, and the Catalytic Converter. It is getting rediculous. Is the recall just on 00-03 and what are chances of getting reimbursed?

I had replaced the hub ass'y, bearings, contol arms, BALL JOINTS, etc on my Dak (99, 5.2, 4X4) about a yr ago ($500 with the warranty). when I took it in, the mechanic showed me someting very frightening. While he had it on the lift, he grabbed the tire, and shook the entire wheel ass'y still mounted on the truck. He proceed's to tell me "I don't know how you made it this far, you wheel should've fallen off by now" GREAT!!! Now the front end is making noises/squeeks/clunks again and with the recall and such, It's a comforting thought when I drive to and from work everyday at about 75 mph, knowing that my wheel could fly off, probably killing me as my truck cuts across the interstate, and injuring or even killing other people as I take them out too. Now even though I have a '99, and the recall is for 2000 on, aren't the suspensions, identical? Or at least the ball joints? And if so, what is the address to the person in charge of the recall at DC, So I can send them a letter much like this, along with the bill as I prepare to take my truck in.

List of things I want recalled on my 1999 Dakota...
The intake hasket...it could cause my engine to lock up.
Rear axle speed sensor...it could keep my ABS system from working and I could rear end someone while I am stopping.
Headlamp switch...my fog lamps stopped working and now I can't see as good in the fog and rain.
Wheel bearings...this caused excessive tire wear which could be hazardous in wet weather.
Upper control arm bushings...ummmm they are noisy and I am sure could cause some real saftey issue.
Brake rotors...my truck shakes when braking and distracts me while I am driving.
Thermostat gasket...is leaking and could cause an overheating issue.
Catalytic converter...could become restricted and cause a stall while driving.

...and I'll let you know what else I want recalled as it fails on my truck.

Spoke with NHTSA today 1999 Dodge Dakota and Durangos' are not included in the recall. However the number of complaints is close for them to be considered in the future. So everyone with a 1999 who has had ball joint troubles, File a complaint with NHTSA ASAP. Under a recall we can expect reimbursement for the cost of the work to repair the ball joints. But they need complaints. Web site is www.nhtsa.gov or for complaints http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
