Message: This thread is called recall on 99 Dakotas. Can all you Duragno people start your own thread on Durangos? Damn it's hard to follow anything on this forum because everybody jumps in with different vehicles and other problems. Stick with the topic please. It's very easy to start another thread. I realize the vehicles may share parts and problems but I own a Dakota and and am not interested in wading through all the Durango posts. I want to hear from people with 99 Dakotas only.

Message: My 1999 V-6 Dakota started doing the same thing at about 55K miles, the Dodge Dealer first "adjusted the linkage" and gave it back. That did not help so I took it back and they rebuilt the transmission. No recall that I know of.

Message: I bought my 1999 Dodge Dakota used in 2001. It wasn't two months and the cadilidic converter went out on it at 52k. Then I started getting a sqeeking noise in the suspension on the passenger side by the front tire. Then my check engine light came on at 70k and both my front and rear speed sensors had gone out at the same time. Now hear a bad rattle under the hood and a rubbing by the front driverside wheel. I took it to a dealer and they said it was in normal operation. WHATEVER! I now have 92k on it and I am so sick of the issues. I would love to buy a new vehicle but I can't aford it.

Message: Jessica,
I too have a 99, 2wd, anyways, is the sound most audible out of the passenger window with the windows down and only when your making turns? If so have your backing plates on your brakes checked, that's what mine was. It was the mechanics screw up when they did my brakes, I had to have my front rotors replaced as well and somehow in the process the backing plate got bent and I had this god awful metal on metal grinding sound whenever I went around a corner, even without applying the brakes. Mine was on my front passenger so I'd imagine whatever wheel it's coming from, just check that one. It did kinda sound more from under the hood too. Pep Boys did my Brakes, there ok once everything was fixed, they got me in same day at a different location after driving out of town and hearing that sound and got it fixed, they just had to bend it back. Hope this helps!!

Message: I own a 1999 dodge dakota, yeah dont get me wrong its a nice truck. About two years ago my paint started fading, now the truck is almost completly faded out. I heard sqeaking in the front end. I had it looked at by a mechanic who said that it was my ball joints, a popular discussion. Not only that my brakes, rotars, tie rod,fan belt, just $700.00 to fix. I promise ill never buy a dodge again.

Message: My 99 has had all these same issues. I have had the catalytic converter replaced three times, and I still have the same rattle, it would go away for about six months then come back. Replaced the belt tensioner that rusted, and the water pump last year. I've had to replace various sensors speed and tranny, and just had the bushings around the ball joints replaced. I was told the ball joints themselves were still OK because I do mostly highway miles, and rusting isn't as bad in Arizona, but my brother in Texas has a 2000 Dakota and he was told he needs to have his replaced. With all the problems this truck has had I have only ever gotten one recall for a brake line. I don't think I'd buy another dodge.

Message: My 99 quad cab dakota 5.2 liter v-8 with 72,000 miles has been in the dealers shop 3 times now with water pump screw ups. It keeps leaking. Its still under warrenty but that doesn't make me feel any better. If they can't get it right this time, it'll be the last dodge I'll ever buy. Man I wish I made a bunch of money so I could buy another truck to replace this thing when I pay it off in a few months but I was hoping that this dakota would be free of major trouble at least up to 100,000 miles.

Message: steven, if you have a quad cad, it's not a '99 and not a 5.2. '00 = first year for quad cab, 5.2 discontinued, first year for 4.7.

Message: daddio, sorry about this misinformation. Its a club cab not a quad cab. Its a 99' I looked on the jam where then ven #'s are. I called up the dodge dealer here in Tallahassee. The service manager (Brett) was more than happy to put me in a new rental car during this inconvenient voyage.
They replaced the water pump again and got it done in a record dealer repair time. We'll see if this one holds out for a while. The old lady and I need to up grade the family ride. Right now she drives a 98 nissan altima (have never had a problem with it) we've got two small kids, any suggestions? I want something van like, the suv stuff sucks. Go-noles!

Message: Hey all, It's me again! I just put my truck back in the shop again. I had to replace both hub assemblys and wheel bearings. Then I got my belt tensioner fixed. All together it cost me almost 500 dollars. Now my cigarette lighter quit working. If it isn't one thing then it is another.
The dang thing is still making a funny rattling metal noise under the hood that is unexplained.

Message: I had a rattle that I couldn't identify for a long time... seemed it came from two places... one was under the chassis and the other was under the hood.
I thought it was all the same big rattle, but it turned out that the rattle under the chassis was my catylitic converter gone bad (warranty to 80,000, I think).
The rattle under my hood was actually really bad idling caused by a vacuum leak. There was a little metal tube stub that the rubber plug fell off of. Who knows how long it was like that? Replaced it and went for a 10 mile drive on the highway.
All's good since those two fixes... except my newly squeaking ball joints.

Message: The issues with your cat converters are caused by a faulty computer firmware version which is telling the computer to advance the timing when it shouldn't .. next thing you know the truck is pinging ..unburnt fuel is being dumped into the cat converter...then whammo presto! goodbye cat converter!.
..mine started pinging ..when I got to my job and went to park..it kinda backfired...and whadda ya know it refused to start ..I popped the hood could really smell the fuel.. So I thought it had just floodced.. well no such luck.. the cat converter was compkletely blocked and had burnt clean thru..the bummer was that I had a flowmaster on it and changing to the new cat converter changed the sound of my exhaust.. it sounds metallicy now...
anyways.. you need to take it in and have it flashed with the updated firmware..this should solve the problem

Message: Ugh! Had my Dakota since March 1999-no major problems unitl I read up on the plenum gasket problem. So, right now I'm getting that replaced along with BOTH rocker arm cover gaskets. I can only look foward to the ball joints now. By the way the truck has 83000 miles on it, and runs great. ( maybe better now)

Message: My 99 2DR has developed a roar in the front end. Sounds like a wheel bearing. I would like to replace both hubs. Does anyone know where I can buy the hubs and have them shipped to an APO AP address. I'm in South Korea and it is hard to get common/easy parts to install. The resister is out on my heater fan switch and can't find a part number for that, anyone have the P/N? Thanks in advance.

Message: I have a 99 dakota that I bought with with 38000 miles on it. Its now three years later and has just over 70,000 on the odometer. In the relatively short time I have owned this truck I have replace both front wheel bearings, rotors, fan clutch, water pump, passenger side brake caliper, and last but not least the catylitic(sp?) converter. This truck with standard transmission and a 3.9 liter v6 gets less gas mileage and hasnt the power that my old automatic 4.0 liter Ford Ranger had. I haul a 4000 lb boat and my Ford was a noticeably better tow vehicle. My shiny black Dodge does look pretty sitting the drive though. Any one want to buy this beauty? Iam going back to Ford trucks!!!!!!
