Message: Just took my 2000 QC 4x4 in for ball joint recall, now they tell me I need new rack & pinion and intermediate steering shaft.
Sounds like I'm already getting the 'shaft'
The new ball joints seem to have cured a plethora of popping noises, am really happy about that ...not to mention I don't have to worry about my wheel falling off while I'm driving.
My GF said she heard something 'fall off' the truck as she was pulling out of the dealership!!
Wonderful.
I can't find anything obviously missing, but it certainly reinforces my lack of confidence in Chrysler's quality and service.

Message: Usually, tire wear problems are a result of bad alignment, not the R&P. Try going to another $tealership for a second opinion. Have them show you the problem (if any) while it's up in the air, or show you the bad part.
But, yeah, if an alignment was done recently, that should help. I never [could] align a car if the R&P was bad, but on a 2000? what the hell could've gone wrong?

Message: There have been a few wear issues with the rack and pinion units on Dakotas. Don't act surprised.

Message: Finally got a good look at the intermediate steering shaft, it definately needs replacing. The lower u-joint on the shaft has visible play in a worn out hole where the joint 'cross piece' fits into the yoke. This is noticable as slight play in the steering wheel while driving straight. This steering wheel play was first noticed at about 30K-40K miles. I know I mentioned it to the dealership, but they have no record. I guess a 'mention' doesn't qualify as a 'complaint'
Got my hands on a new R&P for a good deal, but still can't afford a new shaft. I'd prefer a Borgenson unit, but they don't stock or have specs to make a Dakota part.
