Chrysler is recalling more than 500,000 vans and pickup trucks equipped with automatic transmissions because the transmission interlock system may fail, allowing the vehicle to roll away after being parked and cause a “crash without warning.”
“On certain vans and pickup trucks equipped with automatic transmission, the ignition/park shift interlock system may become inoperative,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“This can allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the ignition key removed or in the lock position” or allow the key to be removed when the shifter is not in the park position, NHTSA reported.
“Either of these conditions could allow the vehicle to roll away causing a crash without warning,” NHTSA said on its Web Site.
The recall involves the Dodge Dakota and Durango from the 2001 to 2002 model years, the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup and the Dodge Ram van from the 2001 and 2002 model years.
Dealers will replace the gear shift blocker and bracket assembly free of charge when the recall begins in January.
Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
