i bought a dakota 2 weeks ago and i find it a pig on fuel. i filled it up to 3/4 and drove it till the fuel light came on and i only got 280km if that. Was wondering if its just a small fuel tank or is there somthing else going on. thanks

That's about 11 miles/gal.
Kind of low, unless you drive hard and/or in a hilly or mountainous area. Could be the type of fuel you're using, maybe it needs a tune-up and fresh fluids and filters.

How can you tell it's 11 MPG.? Wasn't full and was not empty either. Do a real check starting at full up and run her out.Fill it again. Read miles and come back here. We'll be waiting..

So many problems .... So little time

Just made a few presumptions, and guessed he had a regular or club cab:
3/4 of a 22 gallon tank = 16.5
280 Km = 174 miles
174 / 16.5 = 10.5
rounded up to 11

If he has a quad cab:
3/4 of a 24 gallon tank = 18
174 / 18 = 9.6

Either way, that's not good gas mileage.

How does this topic fit in with dealer TSB and recalls anyway? This site is full of dumb butts that can't seem to follow simple forum etiquette

you can't check mileage without filling up running a tank out then filling up again. to calculate mileage as you have tried your gas tank would have to be perfectly square or rectangular and the fuel level sending unit exactly linear, which they are not.

I bought my 04 Quad 4x4 V8 10/03, beginning of Winter. I averaged mid 11s to high 12s for that first Winter, Mid 13s through the next warm seasson, didn't really even consistently hit 14 or beter on a regular basis until I had 20 thousand miles. I've touched 18 mpg once on a long road trip with the cruise at 55.

Mileage varies based on so many factors but everybody has their own personal opinion of what is and is not acceptable, and when they don't get it sometimes they waste time and money chasing after problems that don't exist. Before you start looking for malfunctions, analyze your driving style and the road, weather, and traffic conditions in your area. Depending on the truck's configuration, age, and all the million other factors that affect mileage, 11 mpg does not sound that unbelievably bad to me.

most of the answers above are intelligent. there are many variables that contribute to more or less MPG. what kind of MPG are you getting? hopefully you're not using the overhead computer and calculating mileage the proper way.

what are the particulars of your truck?

i have an '00 QC w/ 3.9 5spd, 4x2, 3.55:1, 235/75/15's, no p/w, p/l, p/seats and consisently get 18-19mpg in town and have got up to 24mpg hwy. only mods - V8 TB, Underdrive crank pulley and turbo muffler.

I am running the tank down until the light comes on then filling up all the way then calculating the miliage on the trip meter with the gas amount put in the tank. I'm driving an '02 QC with 3:55 4.7L, 4x4 265/75/16 I'm getting around 9-9.5 city and 10.5-11 highway. everything stock on truck with 50k on engine. I know this is not the forum but I'm going to be towing a travel trailer this summer(apporx 6200) loaded weight and was wondering what to do to improve performance? and if I decide to change trans oil should Igo back to stock or synthetic?

I have an 08 Laramie 4WD, 4.7, this is my 5th Dakota, all have been purchased new starting back in 91'. My 08 has 18" wheels and 20K on it. I am getting consistent 22MPG on highway. It has exhaust and a fresh air kit. We are about 2200ft above sea level here in Missouri, when i lived in SoCal, the gas was better, no ethanol added, and at sea level I got 25+ on drives to Vegas. There is a real problem somewhere.
