Subject: cold engine stall- 2.5 98 Dak

I have a '98 Dakota with the 2.5 ltr. Every morning my truck will stall when it first starts up. The previous owner said he replaced alot of the sensors, etc and could never get the problem fixed. I am thinking that it may be the cold start valve or the dist cap-getting overnight moisture. If I let the truck sit- while at work- it starts ok most of the time. Prev owner said he changed the cold start valve thing and I just recently did a tuneup- new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor- to no avail. Is this some known problem? How can I fix this? I am at a loss. What else could cause this? I think it cant be the o2 sensor, since that doesnt really "kick in" till the engine is warmed-right? The truck has 70k on it and the prev owner said it has been doing this to him for awhile also. Once truck is warm, it will start with no problems. It uses no antifreeze so I am guessing that the head and gasket is good. My email is- john27pa@alltel.net- please get me there as I am not sure if I can get the messages here.

Had this prob with my 99'Dak. Would start but then would die unless I keep my foot working the gas pedal to keep the revs up until it warmed up a little. If I took my foot off the gas the RPMs would drop and it would die. It semed like the choke was not working. sometimes it would start fine. other times it would have the stalling problem again. One morning my battery was dead and I had to jump start it. Since it was the OEM battery about 5 yrs old I figured it was time for a change anyway. After I put the new batter in it never had the start problem again. I figure low voltage had something to do with the computer messing up the idle or something. All I know is that it cured the problem and I didn't have to take it to the dealer to diagnose the problem. I groused about having to buy a new battery, but it probably saved me a lot more than that if I had to have taken it to the dealer.
