Subject: 98 Dakota dies & rattles IP: Logged
Message: Not at the same time, of course. And definitely not when I take it to a mechanic. I have a 1998 3.9 6-cyl automatic 2WD with 121k miles. Here's what's happening:
At any given speed (even stopped), the truck will be going fine, then the RPMs drop to zero, I lose all brakes and steering, all dummy lights come on, and the engine dies. I've done everything I can think of to intentionally cause this to happen so I can find a solution, but to no avail. Most of the time (while still moving), the engine will come back up and drive normally for a few more minutes before doing it all over again; sometimes, the engine dies completely, leaving me to drive it to the side of the road w/o power steering or brakes (try doing THAT safely at 65+ MPH). Any ideas what could be wrong?
Lastly, there's this INSANE RATTLING NOISE coming from the under side of the truck at any RPM. The ratting increases in speed as the truck accelerates. I *think* it's the catalytic converter (with the engine off, I whacked it with a rubber mallet and it rattled), but I'd like to see if someone else has or had the same problem & how they fixed it. Thanks, folks.

Message: if the converter rattles it's bad. Abad converter can cause problems. If the emmissions from the bad converter pass the sensors it can cause the computer to misjudge the fuel flow- maybe think it's too lean and cut the gas causing your engine to die. Without power your power accessories won't work like brakes or steering. i thin the converter is warrantied to 80,000 miles, though I could be wrong.

Message: I think I would suspect the coil , or connections to , or computer.
Other possibility is power to fuel pump !
You didn't say anything about the "check engine [mil] light , does it come on ?
Autozone can read the codes for you..

Message: exact thing just happened to my 1998 slt ext 3.9 AT 4x4 120k it was the throttle sensor at the back of the tranny and my cat went splat, causing my muffler to collect all the debris.

Message: Take it one step at a time rather then spend money on things you don't need. It's obvious the cat is shot. Install a new cat and drive. If it's plugging bad enough it may very well be your only problem.
So many problems .... So little time
