Subject: Backfire IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 Dakota 3.9L automatic with 74000 miles.
This truck runs great when engine is cold or hot, the problem is after truck sits for 15 to 20 mins it backfires thru exhaust and is extremly sluggish until it once again reaches normal operating temperture. If you accelerate hard during this time it doesn't backfire, it only does so on light acceleration but ONLY after sitting for the 15 to 20 mins.
Local Dodge Dealer has duplicated problem but has no idea how to fix it. BUT they did charge me $260.00 for a tune up. HaHa
P.S. The check engine light is not on.

Message: My 97 Dakota did the exact samething! I replaced plug wires, plugs, both o2 sensors. And it turned out to being the Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor. Which will cost ya a $100 bucks, and takes you 10 minutes.

Message: Whatever it is fix it. Backfiring broke my cataletic converter, and our trucks don't use the cheap ones.
