Subject: LSD differential /w metal debris in oil

I suggest to all with LSD that you go thru your differential before it's off warrantee, checking for any metal parts, debri etc. My 01 Dak with 4.7 & 3.55 LSD was getting its rear diff oil changed last night (still working perfectly) and there were chunks of metal in the oil that looked like pieces of clips made of roll-pin type material(? poor description I know!). The parts were the little clips or retainers that hold the Limited Slip Differential (LSD) clutch plates together. I had three pieces stuck to the magnet and the oil had a fair bit of filings in it. My truck has 99,600km (out of a 100,000km, 5 yr warrantee). Lucky I had that 1 week a 400Km left,,, I took it in today and it is all covered by Warantee, but the whole carrier and a couple bearings, etc, need to be replaced. There is no kit, so it would be expensive, hense give it a look before the warrantee expires. The mechanic took a look at the debris and said to go ahead and order the parts, he's seem a "couple" Dakotas with this before & he didn't need to see the truck, LOL.

Mine goes in Friday for the repair and I'm going to get the tranny checked out & its oil changed too. I'd post a pic, put doesn't look like I can.
PS Good pic here

UPDATE - Actually the work order said the bearing retainers had failed in mine. New carrier and bearings, etc,,, no charge.
Hope the new part is improved.

My rear end died at about 250,000 miles. I replaced it with a limited slip, which was cheaper. I use Amsoil gear lube, no additives, and it is quiet and smooth.
