 Subject: BJ's replaced - still hear clunking?

I see lots of posts of the sort "I had my upper ball joints replaced under recall / warrenty, and I still hear clunking." So did I. In addition, I passed two "complete" front end inspections (one at the dealer and one at my local "wheel and frame" shop), and still was hearing the clunking . . . especially when breaking. Finally one of the owners at the local shop took a look. It turned out to be the joint which connects the steering column to the rack. When I asked the owner why his techs hadn't detected this earlier, he mentioned that this part is not usually inspected.
Since this was a warrenty item, I went back to the dealer, where I was told "we've never ever replaced one of these." But sure enough, they inspected and then replaced the part and my clunking noise is gone!
I continue to see posts here about troublesome clunking noises even after BJ replacment and multiple front end inspections. I'm trying to get a handle on whether problems with this joint might be more pervasive then the dealer let on. So I have a question:
Has anyone else had issues with this particular joint?

PS: If anyone has passed multiple front end inspections and still has a problem and decide have this joint inspected, please post the results here. As always, YMMV . . .

How much did this cost? I have had the lowers replaced and been assured twice that everything is fine. Idiots can't hear the same thing I hear??!?

dont get depressed its going to be O.K.
i have the same damn clunk and have replace both lower and upper ball joints.
i have just got to the point were i just don't care anymore and i'm going to wait for it to fixes it self.

LOL Thats how I feel about my engine light sometimes. Thats another story.
I figure about the time my wheel falls off someone might finally be able to see the problem.
