Subject: Consistenly Inconsistent 97 Dodge Dak IP: Logged
Message: HOOAH. Man.. i'm being pressured into buying a 97 dodge truck off my pops. I don't know what to doooo. I like the truck.. we're the 2nd owners... but it's at that point where it needs some major attention.
It's just about to hit 170K.
Here's the symptoms of what i've noticed about it.. and hopefully some of you Dodge brainiacs can help me decide what to do.
Soooo here it is.
It's a 97 Dakota 3.9V6. 5 speed manual tranny and short cab/box. (emerald green and damn sleek lookin)
PROBLEMS:::::
1)+_ It had a new clutch put in about 2 years ago and for some reason... recently.. it's been right sticky shifting into 2nd and 3rd. The fluid has been recently drained and changed. And it's a hot summer over in Ontario. So i can't understand what would cause this.
2). I believe the shocks are going... what are the common symptoms of such? If i stand outside of my truck and rock it side to side.. i'm gettin some Eeee er Eeeer er outta the front end.
3)>( My brakes click like a mofo when i turn and brake or suddenly stop.
4) I recnetly had the ball joints replaced about a year ago and i still get a Thump when at low speeds hoppin up the driveway.
5) A clicking noise occurs from the front end when i dry steer or hop up a driveway
6) As per the engine... oooh.. man.. the truck was purchased with a slight ticking noise under the hood at 25K... it's been there ever since.. but it's starting to get louder and louder. Pretty much Head turning loud. ( i also have aftermarket dyno exhaust.. and performance cat... ) :(
7) When the clutch is released in teh lower gears... I get a Clunk noise from the tranny.... oooh i'm cringing just thinking about all this schtuff.
8) I have a crazy arse spark knock from the front end and the plugs, distributor, wires, coil, air filter, oil and all that good stuff was recently installed/changed by a mechanic.
9) Aside from all this bulls#!t.. i can pick the truck up for 3,000 canadian.
10) What should i do? Can anyone gimme an idea as to what i'm looking at for work.. if it's simple fixes... some insights? to any of the numbered problems. I would most definately appreciate it.. if u think it's gonna be a long a$$ solution... send me a note to sokos_17@yahoo.ca
Aside from that, a new problem has arose
11) I'm gettin a wheeening noise.. as i increase speed. With or without the clutch engaged... adn with or without the tranny in gear. i'm thinking it has something to do with my drivetrain. But i'm not sure..
I'm your average joe with an average job and don't wanna buy the truck for 3 and put another 3 into it.
Please hElp

Message: I can offer one cure re #6 engine noise: TIMING CHAIN NEEDS REPLACEMENT. My 95 dak v-6 was quiet when cold, but once it warmed up you could hear it chattering a mile away! $800.00 (cdn)later for the repair no more noise! It even ran smoother and stronger for a 220,000 km truck. This is a common problem with the V-6. More Dodge junky parts! Argh!!!!!!!!
