Message: I noticed this today for the first time. I brushed it off as my nose playing tricks on me, but now that I read this, I think maybe I was right. Just got the truck a week ago ('99 Dakota Sport 4X4). I think I will take it in tomorrow and have it checked out, but at least from what I have read here, it doesn't sound too serious...

Well, I guess you can add me to the list of Dakota owners that has the antifreeze odor but no noticable leaks.
Does anyone know if there is a Dodge/Chrysler Tech Bulletin on the issue?
TIA,
Rick

Message: Rick, I checked on our computer loaded with Mitchell manual @ work (I am a government fleet mechanic), also I asked the dodge dealership service advisor and he said he was not aware of a TSB on this problem. BTW, the same advisor is trying to get a zone manager's approval on replacement of my heater core on customer satisfaction/good faith, etc. (it helps that I know the service advisor since I was a mechanic at that dealership a few years back)

Message: Thanks for the quick reply, Ed.
I took a serious look with a good flashlight yesterday to find the leak source and sure enough, I have a leak around the thermostat housing. Sigh. Now looks like a good time to put that 180-degree thermostat in while I'm in there wrenching.

| RE: anti-freeze odor IP: Logged
Message: Rick, I would advise against the 180 degree thermostat as it may not allow your dakota to fully warm up, heater operation could possibly not get as warm, the vehicle's computer could possibly see that the engine temp is not warm enough and not let it go into closed loop, which could cause excessively rich mixtures, especially if you do a lot of short trips. there is a reason that most of today's vehicles have 195 degree thermostats, they were designed to run hotter to run cleaner and leaner.

Message: I know this is a Dakota site but I am having the same problem with a A/C 1986 Reliant K car. I changed the thermoatat and flushed the heater and have had a smell ever since.( last Feb) The windows don't fog or have a film and the reserve take level doesn't show any apparent change. I bought some Bars leak to add but haven't put it in a someone said it would plug the heater. I am now getting desperate- can someone direct me to someone who can help! Thanks.

Message: Bill, sounds as if you may have a slight leak in the heater core. only way to be sure is to pressure test the cooling system and check the heater core for leaks, the bad thing is that the heater core is not easy to look at to see for sure if it is leaking....usually it is buried somewhere in the dash.
BTW....the inside of my cab STILL smells of coolant AFTER the heater core was replaced because of a leak. I am sick of that smell! (the windows do defrost ok now though, might be residual coolant left in the heat duct work or something)

Message: jpmaker, flat rate time on my 98 dakota sport was 7.5 hours for the heater core, the mechanic said he did it in 6.5 hours, hourly shop rate was 90.00 an hour, plus the heater core itself was 192.00. so total was pushing 1,000.00!! I checked on aftermarket heater cores locally, they listed for around 60.00 to 70.00. be aware if you do the heater core yourself the dash will have to come out to access the heater core (this is what the dealer technican told me).

Message: gasket in thermostat housing changed but still strong odor of anti-freeze when I lift the hood. No signs of leaking. Also same 99 dakota sport 4x4, 6cyl., has it been common for crank shaft sensor, distributor, IAC motor to go on this truck. I have brought this truck into dealer 4 times..first they changed IAC motor, truck still did not run, then charged battery, truck ran, truck sat for week and did not turn over, dealer put in new battery truck ran, used overdrive button several times, truck ran rough, truck sat for another week, truck would not start, battery had charge but dealer then changed distributer and crank shaft sensor...dealer told me dodges can not sit for weeks they must be driven every day...I say yeah right! I am sueing dealer to repurchase truck to many problems with 50,000 miles..

Message: I have a '99 Dakota and have a smell of antifreeze in the cab. I took it to the dealer and they did a cooling system pressure test. The mechanic said it held something like 17 pounds for 1 hour with no leaks. Are there any components that the pressure test does not apply to such as the Heater Core or the thermostat housing?

Message: when the system is pressure tested it tests all of the cooling system, heater core and thermostat housing included. yours may have a tiny leak in the heater core that is not big enough to show by pressure testing but it is enough to get in the heater core box and stink up your cab. I had my heater core replaced back in dec. of last year and I still faintly smell the coolant in the cab, especially under full accel. the coolant level has not dropped in over 6 months though.
