I was told the Bad style does not have any grease fittings...does that mean the new ones do?I know they are saying they will warranty my current ball joints up to 100000 miles but if mine are ok why are they offering this and I have found that dealers will not give away any information. My dad has a 99 dodge and he had to change the intake gasket and every time he brought it to the dealer they told him nothing was wrong... and my 2003 v6 is showing the same lesser symptoms as his truck did,but yet at 38000 miles he went through 4 quarts of oil in 700 miles and it was from the intake gasket...at least thats what the dealer told him after they put it on the comp... after the warranty had run out so my father had to pay for the repair himself out of his pocket, like I said the dealer will not give away any info...but it seems funny how now there is a tsb on the intake problem. My point is being that I have found you cannot trust dealers or manufacturers and I would like to know other than just seeing my manufacture date is there some way I can tell if My ball joints could go Bad,I have a family to think about...

The original service bulletin for the revised intake gasket repair is atleast 5 years old. If you feel like this information was withheld from you, then you should pick another dealership or check the internet. There are no secrets anymore. Dealers that don't "give away" information are in the dark ages.
The new ball joints do NOT have lube fittings. Take a look around, not many newer vehicles have lubrication fittings of any kind. The consumer demand for less maintenance and longer service intervals has guided this change.

Just so everyone knows, I just had my upper ball joints replaced, FOC by my local dealer, supposedly under the recall. The interesting thing is that my truck is a 2000 2-wd with a 4.7 V-8. This vehicle is NOT officially part of the recall, (for now). I suspect the reason they were willing to do this is to keep a low profile, to avoid having to expand the recall to 2WDs as well.

The reason they did so was because the 2WD's have an extended warranty up to 10 yrs 100000 miles.

Dealer told me that there is only one known instance of a wheel falling off....And there is no maintenance records for the truck....received my recall notice Wed. and the service is scheduled for Monday...My local dealer has been great about service....Note: It would be interesting to know if the state where the truck under question has a state inspection program..Several states do not have any inspection program which would catch a ball joint problem if the inspection is performed correctly.

To the best of my memory, there were 5 confirmed cases of a ball joint separation allowing a wheel to fall over. Fortunately, no one was injured in any case (as far as I know).

On 10-1-04, I had to have the ball joints replaced on my 99 Durango 4 wheel drive that has 72,500 miles. The garage informed me that the ball joints that were on the car were not substantial enough for the weight of the car. The replacements are much more substantial. I hope that they will include that 1999 Durango's in the recall as they obviously have the same problem!

I'm curious what prompted the design change of the ball joints in January 2003. It seems that someone at DC knew about the potential problem before then or there would be no reason to change anything. Too bad it took two years and the NHTSA to force them to fess up. A lot of people could have gotten hurt in that time. I got my recall letter a couple days ago. I replaced all four ball joints myself in November so I'm going to try and get reimbursed for my time as well as the cost of the upper joints. According to the recall letter the job takes two hours, so I figure 2 hours at $79.00 an hour (that's the going rate at the local dealership). Wish me luck...lol

It's funny- I went to the dealer two weeks ago asking about this recall and it's efect on my 01 2wd, and they said they have not recieved information regarding any recall from daimler, and untill they do, I would have to wait. I told them it's been all over the news that 600,000 owners of 4wd models were supposed to recieve a notice in the mail, and that my 2wd is supposed to have the steering warrenty extended to 100k miles. The dealer said I should recieve something in the mail from dodge notifying me of the warrenty extension, and at that point, the dealer will have recieved the information from DC, and be able to perform a warrenty service. But someone I know has already recieved a notice for their 4wd, and I've got nothing from the company at all. How long should I continue to wait before I go back and make another issue of it?

Randy, the 2WD's are not 4WD's. They are being handled completed differently.

MarilynA, they are different. The investigation by NHTSA confirmed only the specified year models had the potential for a wheel to fall off. Just because a safety related part has the potential to fail, does not mean RECALL. The NHTSA investigation determines the risk associated with the potential failure. Failures happen constantly and often show a pattern, but that alone is not enough to = RECALL.

HI again. Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I still have yet to get a recall notice on my dodge 4x4 and the dodge dealership where I purchased the truck said that they had not received word about a recall on my 2001 model and its probably only affecting trucks made in a certain area that the ball joints where put on trucks. he said for me not to worry, yea okay with my kids in the truck i shouldnt worry about crashing. I have tried to trade it in but other dealership will not even take it without first having the ball joints replaced first. as well as charge me a arm and leg for a new vehicle. Why is it that other dealerships like ford , chevy know about the recall but not my dealer?

You have 2 incomplete recalls on your Dakota:
#C35 HEADLAMP AND DASH WIRING HARNESS
#D47 UPPER BALL JOINTS

If your dealership did not provide this for you, it is because they are lazy. It is available to dealership personnel and takes less than 30 seconds to obtain from the tech website.

frame5- had mine done yesterday, and it does make a lot of difference. Much firmer steering feel and absorbes the potholes.

I had them save the old parts, and the shop manager said they did replace them but didn't need to, that some vertical travel is "normal" and preferred in the joints. I told him sorry, a truck with 18K miles that drives like a bag of vegetable soup and sounds like an old screen door is not "normal" or "preferred."

It still makes me mad that DC will not re-align the vehicle with the new equipment as part of the recall.

If your dealership did not set the toe after installing ball joints, they did not complete the recall exactly as DC pays them to. Setting the toe is a requirement of the recall procedure.
