Message: Kevin in UK:
It would be prudent to have your ball joints inspected at every oil change. They can be visually checked to see if the rubber boot is torn, which rapidly accelerates wear. This can be done without removing the wheels, just crank the steering all the way over and you can inspect joints through the wheel well (at least on a 4X4 model you can.) Another indicator seems to be front end vibration (this could also be brake rotors) as well as various dull 'popping' noises while turning, accelerating, braking, driving over bumps etc. I've had my ball joints replaced under recall, and many of these symptoms have disappeared. If I were you, I'd be saving up some money to replace the ball joints before your truck reaches 50k km, anything after that is increasingly risky in my opinion. The ball joints themselves are relatively inexpensive and easily found online (eBay is a good starting point,) make sure you buy a good quality aftermarket brand, (like Moog) preferably with grease fittings (aka Zerks.) Any decent mechanic should be able to replace them fairly quickly, uppers can usually both be done in under an hour, and lowers might require 1-2 hours per side. Good luck.

Message: Thanks for the reply John K. My Dakota has only done 1000 miles so no worries yet. My brother has a '96 ram and he's had to replace ths steering arm with a Moog item. Built really well & strong too. Will pass on your advice and the site to the other guys in the club.
Niggles aside these things are so damn comfortable. Heading for Southern France in mine in about 8 weeks. What a wine carrier!!! Feel free to e-mail via my regular address. The whole American car scene is huge in the UK. Would be great to swap stories ,pictures etc. I fthat's not your thing then that's ok too!!!
Thanks again,
Kevin.

Message: I would assume a RECALL is mandated to rectify substandard design, quality or workmanship that poses a potential or proven hazard. Since the BJ recall was mandated instead of voluntary, I'd also assume that replacement parts must be of different, if not superior, quality.
Then again we're talking about corporate bottom line here.

Message: We have two Dakota's, 2000 4cyl and 2001 V-8. Got recall letters on BJ's for both, but has anyone fought the mileage limit? The 2000 is the long commuter and has over 200,000 miles on it. Letter says this disqualifies the recall. Never heard of that on a Federal recall.
Also, different topic I haven't found on your board yet- the 2000 has run great for 4 1/2 years, no problems, regular maintenance. Three days ago it got to work fine, but would not start later. Had to be towed home. Changed plugs, wires, coil, the electrical in the distributor, everything to no avail. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Could it be the Powertrain control module (which, it seems, is a dealer part)?
Any ideas on these two topics would be appreciated.

Message: it's takes gas and fire so if you're making fire are you sure you're getting gas? I'd check the fuel pump and injectors and all the sensors that make them squirt, before changing the PCM.

Message: Thanks. Yes, we have fuel, just no fire. I finally found another thread in here somewhere re: this issue. Someone suggested trading the PCM with someone else's to test the possibility without the expense. Does anyone know how interchangeable they are? Our 2001 Dakota Quad (our only other reliable vehicle) is a V-8, automatic. We also have a friend who has the same truck model as our 'dead' one, but not sure of the year or engine size. Don't want to kill her truck, too. I'm wondering if that could happen. Could we hurt the other PCM if it were the wrong model or application?
Thanks. Janet

Message: I bought a 2007 Dakota with the 22.1 gallon tank a rarely get 200 miles to a tank. I'm normally lucky to get 180 miles to a tank. The dealer juust kept stating that there was nothing wrong and that 7-10 miles a gallon was normal. I can't wait till I pay it down enough to trade it off and I will never buy another Dodge anything ever again. This was my 4th Dodge truck and its definitely the last because of the way they treated me when I tried to get waranty work and they never fixed anything!

Message: Hey, msgfmg, those same so called techs told me there was nothing wrong with my 2007 dakota when I was going through tires and had noises under the front and it turned out the my 7 month old truck needed left and right ball joints and outer tie rods and I kept getting the run around and now my truck is out of waranty and I had to pay out of my own pocket to get them replaced. Now the only problem I still have (from day 1 to now) is I am lucky if I get 9 miles to a gallon. So some techs are either to stupid to be doing the job they are hired to do or they are just liars and crooks.

Message: yeah, the recall was VIN specific. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Go to another dealer just to make sure. . . dealers still get paid for recall work. So if it's in the recall, they want the work.

Message: I haven't had any Ball Joint problems with my 97 2500 V10. I also don't understand why Andrew with his 3.7 liter engine has such bad mileage. My V10 gets 11 mpg on the road with or without a trailer or loaded bed. I'm going to a cold air induction system(about $375.00)to increase the mileage. My neighbor did this with his 02 2500 Cummins engine and he was amazed by the new mileage and torque. It might be well worth it if you can get another 3/4 mpg over the long run.
