No, this is just the first step. DC's contention is that since we all already know about the problem, it is not a 'safety recall' issue. The only time they are required to do a recall is if the problem is a 'sudden onset'. That is, you are going along and boom the wheel falls off without any warning. DC's point of view is since the ball joints make lots of noise before they fail (and people have already heard about the ball joints here), there will be no 'sudden onset'. In ohter words, since you as the owner have already been hearing the popping noise, it is now YOUR responsibility to get it fixed.

Right from the CNN article:

"An NHTSA spokesman said that some companies do not comply with its requests for recalls. If that is the case, he said the agency would fight for a recall.

It is fairly unusual, however, for an automaker to fight the agency on a safety recall. "

Agency seeks recall of 600,000 Dodge trucks
Suspension problem seen with Durango, Dakota pickups

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:03 a.m. ET Dec. 10, 2004

WASHINGTON - Federal safety regulators want 600,000 Dodge Durangos and Dakota trucks recalled because their wheels could fall off, but the auto maker doesn’t believe the defect is dangerous, a company spokesman said.

Federal safety regulators have asked DaimlerChrysler AG to recall Durango sport utility vehicles and Dakota pickups from the 2000 to 2003 model years, Chrysler spokesman Max Gates confirmed. He stressed the models haven’t been recalled.

The company is planning to respond to the government’s request early next week, he said Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the recommendation, first reported by CBS News, after investigating reports of upper ball joint separation on dozens of vehicles. When the upper ball joint separates, the suspension can collapse and the wheel can fall off.

There are reports of several crashes but no injuries due to the issue in NHTSA’s investigation file.

Gates said Chrysler recognizes there is a problem with the upper ball joints, but “we do not think it rises to the level of a safety defect.”

Gates said a vehicle owner would hear noise coming from the vehicle well before the upper ball joint failed. Mechanics also will find out if an upper ball joint needs to be repaired during routine maintenance, Gates said.

Gates said if the upper ball joint fails, it is most likely to happen at low speeds and during turns.

According to CNN, it's only for 2000+ pick-ups &
Durangos. SO anyone with a 1999 & older is SOL!!!

When a part is recalled it has to be Replaced with a new one and inspected before issued. It wont be the same ol ball join.

And They will reimburse you the amount equal to mopar parts/labor prolly. Wich is usually more seeing dealer labor rates are sickly compared to home shops.

The following is a cut from a Reuters article on the web right now. It indicates that DaimlerChrysler IS recalling the vehicles.

DaimlerChrysler recalls 600,000

Automaker pulls Dodge Durangos and Dakota pickups; separately, VW, Ford also hit with recalls.
December 10, 2004: 6:39 PM EST

DETROIT, (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler division said Friday it was recalling about 600,000 Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks due to concerns about their safety.

In related news, Ford Motor Co. said Friday it is recalling nearly half a million Escape and Mazda Tribute SUVs and Volkswagen said 290,000 of its diesel-powered cars are heading back to the shop.

DaimlerChrysler (Research), which has claimed major quality gains in recent years, recalled the vehicles Thursday after U.S. federal safety regulators asked it to pull 2000 to 2003 model year vehicles

Finally our voices have been heard. Last year I went round and round with my dealer about the noise from my ball joints after I first heard of an proposed class action lawsiut regarding the durangos. The last thing they told me was that the issue was only focused on the durangos because they don't use the same ball joints that of the dakotas. They told me that my ball joints where with in specs. Yeah! OK you SOB's. So, I held out hopeing for something like this to happen. He he , it paid off! Recalls will be issued next month. My dealer has no option. Suckers!

Some of you with 03's may be disappointed!

Units manufactured after 12/31/2002 are not eligible for the recall / replacement joints.

Here's the DC document.

I have a 94 Dakota, That I purchased from the original owner. It has 30,xxx miles on it and I had had to replace all of the ball joints for Pa. inspection, last week. Was there a ball joint recall for the 94's ?? This is a "pristine" truck - not a off-road junker.

The thing that your dealer won't tell you until they break down the upper ball joint in order to replace it, is the following: Things always happen in pairs. You will be notified that you should replace the lower ball joints. It will cost with labor, around $500.00 depending on the bench rate at your dealership. This will occur when the upper ball joints are free. If you resist the urge to say "yea, go ahead and change the lower ones out", then it will be much more expensive when they fail. And they will. So for all the people who wanted a truck to ride like a car, I hope you are all happy. Better ride translates to smaller, less dependable parts. Next time, buy a car, not a truck that rides like a car.

I started to hear the dreaded noise in my wheel wells. I am waiting and not driving my 1998 Durango for now, with the hope this recall will include the earlier models. If not, then parts will be around 300.00 for all ball joints to be replaced. Labor will probably be another 200.00

Thats pretty steep to me, but not anywhere near some of the prices I see quoted on this and a few other boards. I guess I am fortunate to have an honest & good mechanic.

I have sent a few letters to the local news offices, Dodge and our local senator regarding the inclusion of the Dodge Durango's from 98 and up. There are over 2000 signatures on it. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I own a 99 RT with 140,000 kms, I use it and abuse it, changed ball joints myself last year with moogs. what a @*?#@! job, but it got done and lowered same time. Everyone can't expect dealerships or DCX to do everything free forever. They are in business to MAKE money not to be charity. Parts wear, stuff happens, it's part of owning a car/truck. If regular maintenance is done, problems would be found before safety is an issue. I also work at a Chrysler dealership in collision dept. and while there some mechanics who try to sell more work, most are honest and would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to changing or leaving a part. Keep in mind you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR when it comes to labour rates for repairs. Best of luck to everyone!
