Message: Hello,
I just test drove a 2002 Dakota 4.7 that has 93000 miles on it. The check gauges light is on, oil pressure low and when I parked it, let it idle, I could hear what I thought was a knock or tick.
After reading these posts I am concerned. What is the likely hood this engine will cause me trouble?

Message: If it has low oil pressure and i knock it most likely needs to be rebuilt. Find another truck!

Message: I just bought a 2000 Durango from a used car dealership yesterday. 8 miles after leaving, the temp red-lined. (I drove 5 miles on the test drive.) I removed the thermostate after searching for it for a 1/2 hour and calling a local auto parts store for help locating it. Apparently it on the OUTPUT side of the radiator, and not sure why. Anyway, overheating persisted. So, After eliminating the water pump as the culprit, I assumed it was a clogged radiator. I noticed "glitter" in the water as it passed thru the hose under the fill cap, so I assumed that someone has dumped "stop leak" in it. So, I put radiator flush in it and Water Wet. I did make the 1.5 hour drive home, but could not drive over 50 mph or it would overheat. I also had alot of lifter noise on one side of engine, so I put some Seafoam cleaner into the oil. I'm mostly concerned/wondering that the overheating is due to lack of oil lubrication at the top end, but not sure if the lifters may just need to be adjusted, as the salesman told me, "that was all it needed". The motor was supposedly just rebuilt/replaced 3k ago, so it's hard to imagine that sludge is to blame at this point. Oil looks clean and no sign of amulsification. QUESTION: If lifters are making noise, is it already too late, or can engine flushes eventually resolve this?? ALSO: Could "stop Leak" clog the radiator enough to cause water to spit out radiator fill spout when you rev up the rpms a little more than idle, as I did when checking for water flow when trying to see if water pump was working? I figured that radiator was clogged up somewhat, giving me some "back-preasure", thus causing water to spit up at me when reved. FINALLY: I want to prevent further damage of course, so DOES ANYONE KNOW IF A HIGH PREASURE AFTER-MARKET OIL PUMP IS AVAILABLE AND WOULD THAT HELP TO STOP THE SLUDGING PROBLEM IN THE ENGINE?? OR, IF THAT WOULD EVEN WORK IN THESE SUDGE CASES? We also recently lost the engine in a 98 Venture due to a grey sticky sludge throughout the entire engine. The cam apparently overheated, got tight, and broke in half during it's slow death. There was so much sludge in the oil filter, I couldn't believe it! The vehicle was given proper oil changes via dealership every 3K, and this still happened at 88k. We swapped engines with one that had around 40k but it appeared to be barely pumping any oil to the top end when viewing the valves thru the oil fill spout with cap off and while running. This may be normal, I don't know. But, this caused us to assume that replacing the stock oil pump with a high preasure one, would prevent the same proble from accuring again. So far - so good, and no sludge build-up! The oil coming to the top end was noticably more, and SO I WAS WONDERING IF THIS APPARENT "SOLUSION" WOULD WORK ON THE 4.7L DURANGO ALSO?? Thank you for any advice anyone could offer!

Message: I would have turned right around back to the dealer when it started to overheat the first time.
