Subject: Tranny probs. due to larger tires...? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
Just a quick question here,
I have a 1998 Dakota SLT Club Cab 4x4 with all the bells and whistles. Now recently I have had some serious auto-tranny problems and after getting a full rebuild done. I am told it was in fact due to the larger 31x10.50x15 BFG All-Terrains. The truck has an electronically controlled clutch and it has to have the stock 215x75x15 on to work properly.
Anyone else ever heard of this or a better fix than buying new tires...?
Thanks in Advance,

Message: I have the same truck as you Derek and I have not had any problems with my tires of that size. In fact, that can't be true, because mine came like that factory.

Message: Well,
Chrylser says it is true!
If your truck came with 31's and you have the ECC like you say... then it must have come from the factory already calibrated for that particular circumference tire.
Check the sticker on the inside door frame on the drivers side. That says what tire size that actual truck came with. You lucked out if it came with those 31's.
Thanks for the info.

Also it took 55,000 miles plus before those tires caused any Noticeable damage. You might want to check on that. How miles do you have on that truck...?
Thanks for the info.

Message: my truck came w/ 31x10.5x15 at about 30K I went w/ 32x11.5x15...now I have about 110K with no tranny problems. Isn't the tranny on these trucks mechanical not computer controlled? What happened to your tranny requiring a rebuild? What tranny do you have?

Message: Well, My truck came with 215/75/15's for some odd reason and I'm told by Chrysler that only the high end Dakotas and almost all Durango's came with an electronically controlled clutch and not the centrifigual weighted clutch that standard Dakotas came with.
I put on some Dunlop Radial Rover's and got the truck back. Apparently it was the TCU that needed to be reset and the major gears needed to be replaced. The truck shifts better than new and the new tires helped on gas mileage (+15%+/-) , helped on steep hill climbs (no more downshifting or lose of speed) , and it is alot quieter with those little tires as apposed to the larger All-Terrains.
I have the 44 RE 4-speed Auto and it definitely has the ECC. He showed me the old one...
Keep them coming, I dont want anyone to have to go through this.

Message: Hey thanks for the imput, you may have just solved my problem. Sadly in my case, I just bought my 99 auto. 4x4, 2 weeks ago. For some reason i think the guy who solved me the truck knew something was going bad. My first upset was last friday when the tranny slipped going into 3rd. My 2nd upset was putting it in reverse and it stalling. The tranny shop guy said something about the ECC engaged and that and something else caused it to stall. Well looks like i was sold a lemon...Sucks! If anyone else has any imput, please, please, please let me know!
