Subject: TSB for belly pan/spark knock-after warr IP: Logged
Message: 2001 3.9 v6. The vehicle is well beyond the warrenty at 86k, but it was in for the TSB for spark knock. But all the retards did was retard the timing by flashing the computer. They probably did this because it was only the 36k mi warrenty and they figured my father would be beyond that before he noticed the oil consumption. Well now the truck is mine, and I want to know if I'd have any ground to stand on by going to the dealer with my oil burning dak.

Message: Probably not...They will just say that it happened after warranty and that will be the end of it unless you have proof (like another mechanic at the time or pictures) that shows it was bad when it was in the shop at 36K. Really though, it isn't a hard fix, just buy the gasket and do it yourself and you will know it was done right. Or better yet replace the manifold so you don't have to use a gasket.

Message: Well it's got a sticker under the hood that says spark knock TSB and the date performed, but I didn't know there was more than one way daimler authorizes the fix of the same TSB. If the correct procedure in the books is to replace the belly pan gasket, couldn't I argue that the dealer gave themself credit for work not performed?
But yes, if I were going to spend money I'd do it myself. Would probably just use new gaskets and not change the setup.

Message: The problem is that there is more than one TSB about the spark knock. One says to re-reoute the plug wires, one says to flash the pcm, one says to change the gasket. So basically they took the easiest one and hoped that it worked, and if not, hoped that the warranty ran out before you brought it back. So you could say that they should have done the gasket, but technically they did perform one of the TSB's for the spark knock. I know, it sucks bad!!
