Subject: Intake Gasket Leak IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98', 4x4, 5.2L, 60k mile Dakota With a "Leaking Intake Gasket". The symptoms include high oil consumption, engine knock under acceleration or load while using recommended octane fuel. There is currently TSB item that carries a $500. price tag. It appears to be a very common problem with the 5.2 V8 and 3.9 V6 engines through 2000 model year.
I am inquiring if anyone has been able to have Dodge repair this defect out of warranty through "Good Faith", "Customer Service" or otherwise.
Please relay your experience in this matter.

Message: just bought a 98 4x4 v8 slt. the truck i wanted for so long. 46500 mi.... needs a tranny, intake man. gasket and rear end. none of these showed up until a week later when i decided to pay Dodge 50$ to check it out....feel like i got a lemon.. with all these problems at such low milage, even if maintenance was neglected by original owner, seems like dodge's rep. would be questionable... i have done plenty of research now and know that the majority of these problems are common. does yous have the popping front end or any of the other common problems... let me know how the battle goes and what i might expect if i end up keeping the truck??
good luck

Message: I had to replace the intake gasket on my '99 R/T. There is a TSB for the Jeep Wagoneers 5.9 engine. My dealer replaced it under my warrenty when I showed him the TSB.

Message: 97 dakota, 5.2l v8, Same story. It ate about 4 litres of oil on a road trip at 20000 km and would not stop pinging horribly on moderate acceleration. I absolutely loved the engine up to this point, but this was the beginning of a long affair with the service dept. The intake manifold gasket was replaced (warrantee) but the engine was never the same. It would be great for about 1000 km, then start to ping under throttle load. about 300km later after the pinging, the check engine light would come on and stay on.
To be fair, my dealer was good, for two years they tried everything to fix it under warantee (even after it expired), but I got the impression that they had no idea what they were doing. They would clear the code, tried replacing multiple sensors and fuel line parts, computer software updates and finally they admitted that they could not fix it. I was in the process of getting another mech to try something, when the truck was totalled (as I was making my way to dodge to ask about the problem yet again).

Message: Yup... I had this problem as well on my 99 5.2L CC 4x4...
This along with leaks in the rear main seal, timing cover gasket, water pump, and a cracked cylinder head.. at at 36,000 miles.
I only had the truck for 3 months (bought used), so I made the dealer fix it... supposedly the bill came out to about $2,200.

Message: My '99 V6 3.9 SLT automatic seems to have the beginning symtoms of this intake gasket leak in discussion. I haven't noticed it using much, if any, oil though. The only time I notice the pinging and loss of power is when I'm on the freeway and going up a steep grade. If my check engine light has flashed a couple times, will the computer keep that in its memory so the service techs can pin-point the problem? Or isn't it that simple? Also, what is TSB?

Message: I was using a lot of oil and lost power in my 97 5.2.I went to my "5 star" chrysler dealer who advised me of my intake leak. They said they replaced it. Two weeks later my oil pressure gauge drops to zero & comes back when you rev to 1500. Also, lifters clack horribly for three seconds on start up, since they "repaired" it. Whats up?

Message: Just took my 98 dakota with 36,000 miles in to the dealer. Same gasket issue. My truck is out of warranty, however "out of good will" the dealer is only going to charge me $500.00 to fix it. Oh, plus the cost of fluids....

Message: I bought a 2001 Dakota w/ the 4.7L V8, I noticed a few months that my passgenger side floorboard is soaked. I had it checked by two different dealers, they both had it in about five times. They have replaced the drian tube on the AC and it still leaks. They also have tried a # of others things. If anyone has had the same problem and had it corrected please respond. I hate driving a new truck when I have to take it to the shop constantly.

Message: To A. Glazner:
I had water coming in my floor board also. By using a garden hose, I deduced that the rain water is coming down the windshield and dumping into the door hinge area. The interwalls (steel) of the passaenger side, kick panel area would fill with water, then spill over to the floor board thru a small hole under the computer. I never found exactly where it was getting in, though. I used gutter seal on the hinges where they attached to the body. I also created an escape route for the water to exit that cavity, underneath the truck, under the panel area. (body seam, bottom of cab, under passenger side, near front wheel.) I spread the body seam a little with a screw driver.
Currently, I am attempting to fight the pining(Spark Knock)problem.
Good Luck!

Message: I have a 97 Dakota Sport with a 5.2L V8 and
104,000 miles on it, and it needs the intake
manifold gasket replaced for the third time. I
had it replaced at 87,000 miles and the
previous owner had it replaced once. This is
more than a little obsessive for this type of
part. In this day and time why can't they figure
out how to make a gasket last longer than
this. Has anyone else had this same problem
and does anyone know why the gasket fails
so frequently? Is there a more lasting repair
for it?
Thanks

Message: I just returned from the Dodge dealership with my 99 Dakota, V8, 5.2L. I have had numerous problems with the truck since I bought it new. It only has 19,000 miles on it. It has been repainted and has had the thermostat housing gasket, the water pump, and injectors replaced. The truck has idled rough ever since I got it. It now has a leaking intake gasket. The dealership is in the process of contacting their representative at Dodge to see if they will pay for the repair. I love the truck, but enough is enough. And after reading this message board, I'm afraid I will continue to have problems. Thinking about going with a Toyota!

Message: My daughter bought a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2L V-8. Great car, but it sucks a quart of oil every 2 hours on the highway! No smoke! It is at the dealer's right now for the 8th time for this problem. They are tearing down the engine, looking for a problem. I mentioned the intake manifold gasket to them repeatedly, but what do I know. I'm only the customer!
