Message: I'm headed to the Chrysler dealer now, your messages in hand regarding this problem.
I purchased my 98, 2x4, V8 Dodge Dakota new in 1997. I worked 13 highway miles from home. In 2001, with no warning, the oil guage started bouncing all over the place and the check engine light came on. I had lost 5 quarts of oil!!!! Took it to my (Jeep) Chrysler dealer 3 times before a visiting service manager from a Dodge dealership heard the story from my Jeep manager and the problem was finally 'fixed'. Then, for three years I worked 3 miles from home, no highways. No unusual problems. Now I'm 12 highway miles from work and yesterday the oil guage went nuts again. 3 quarts low!!! I have an extended warranty. I called Chrysler customer service and asked them what happens in September when my warranty is up and they suggested I bargain with the dealer to purchase another service agreement!!! I hate to have to fight, but may have no other option. Other than this oil leak I love the truck.

Message: I have a '98 Dakota, 5.2L, 5-speed standard, 4x4, about 65K miles.
It seems I have the same classic symptoms of the intake manifold gasket leak: spark knock on acceleration, loss of power, and oil consumption (about 2 quarts between oil changes, every 3,000 miles). Before I knew about the manifold gasket issue I had a local mechanic try and fix it (the pinging) and he could not. He tried adjusting the timing by turning the distributor, was unsuccessful, and said I probably had a worn camshaft gear. Finally I had to bring the truck into Dodge because of an unrelated issue - the ABS sensor light stayed on. I also told them about the knock/power loss, etc, and they knew right away it was the intake gasket. Now I'm looking at a repair bill of over $1000 to fix the ABS sensor on the rear end, the intake gasket, and readjust the distributor to its correct position. ACK!!!
Here are some other major problems I have had with the truck:
-Fuel pump went kaput at about 10K miles, broke down on the interstate during rush hour, warranty repair.
-Had to have the truck's computer chip reprogrammed due to spark knock early on, no charge under warranty.
-Rear end gear assembly ('the ham') was humming and had to be replaced at about 38K miles, was out of the 36K mile warranty but they replaced the ham at no charge in good faith.
-Upper and lower A frames on one side had to be replaced because the bushings were shot. An over $900+ repair to replace both A frames because MOPAR did not sell the bushings individually (what should have been a ~$150 repair).
-Brake system proportioner valve leaked brake fluid badly and had to be replaced. It no doubt came from the factory with a bad valve, but unfortunately I didn't get it replaced until after warranty had well expired.
If I knew then whet I know now, I would never have purchased this truck!

Message: You might want to contact Krohn & Moss law firm 1-800-875-3666. They were able to get us a settlement very quickly. We bought a new '99 and put only 19,000 miles on it in 3 years. We had one problem after the other; the intake gasket was the last straw. Our dealership was great, but they could only do so much. We now have an '03 Dakota and love it. Not one ounce of trouble with it.

Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with 80,000 miles.
For about a year I had problems with it running rough, bad gas mileage and rpm's way too high. Finally found someone who fixed it saying it was a vaccum leak. Stayed fixed for a few weeks and did almost the same thing again except rpm's stayed high even when parked. They say it is the intake manifold this time. Does this sound right?

Message: ....I wonder if anyone knows how to replace an intake manifold, or is it something best left to a mechanic? From the day I got my truck brand new ('99 V6 3.9L), it always has pinged, but I've never had a problem with it until now.....at 87,000 miles, I've just taken it in b/c a tranny seal was leaking, and the water pump is leaking....the mechanic also told me that the intake manifold is 'seeping'.....said it will eventually start leaking....
