Message: I had the same problem, thought it was the autozone code readers.....
I would meter the appropriate pins with a volt meter and got the right readings (can find the pin outs for OBD II by doing a search).
I then pushed each wire into the socket from behind to make sure they were making contact when a reader was connected...turned out this fixed it. My test probes were longer than the OBD reader contacts, that is why I was getting readings on my meter.
hope this helps...I pulled my hair out on this one.
