Subject: AC only works on High

Message:
My a/c has been going out. The blower stopped blowing on low not long after I bought my truck. I though this was just a Dodge quirk. The A/C light would come on and off, then just turn off all together (on low). If I put it on the second setting it would come back on and blow fine. This is true for all settings above low. Then, just the other day, it stopped blowing on all settings except high. This got me a little concerned. I live in South Texas and it is July! Not a good combo if its about to go out. Well, Yesterday, it doesn't come on at all. When I put the setting on high, the a/c light lights up, but no air comes out. The a/c light doesn't come on in any other setting but high, and doesn't blow in any setting. I'm not sure what is goin on here, but its about to make me not like driving my truck here in south Texas. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

My 01, 4.7, QC, etc. still works fine...

But,....

It could be the resister to the fan, I used to have a Mazda, that did that, changed the resister myself, it's in the dash.

You might check on that from an honest A/C person.

Good luck

Sounds like my problem. The cord that connects to the resistor tends to fry. My blower doesn't blow on the medium-high setting.

To check this, the resistor is a 1 1/2"-4" piece located on the passenger side of the firewall. At least, it is on my 1995 Dak. Check the plug that sits on it. On mine, one of the female prongs is burnt up.

I have a thread in the general Dakota board.. trying to figure out a part number, or exact name for the wire.

Could be the resistor, too. Go ahead and unscrew it, look it over. Might be fried, or something.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll have to look into that this weekend if I get a chance. Last weekend was the rotors/wheel bearing/hubs/pads thing. Pretty damn easy to do w/ the packed hub/bearing assembly. Only problem it's like $128 a pop for the hubs! Man, I forgot what it feels like to stop my Dak w/out the warped pulsating slowdown it used to have. You know, that 12,000 mile "warped rotor option" that comes standard w/ our trucks. Anyway, need to get this a/c fixed, it is getting pretty damn hot down here and I've got a 3 hour trip to make Sunday to some MX races.

Texas Todd, where in TX are you located? I'm in Victoria. Is yours a 4x4?

It's the blower relay on the fan box. I have a 2001 QC and had the same thing go up in smoke. The dealer listed the part for a durango by the part number. Does anyone have a problem keeping the front end aligned? I have had to have mine done twice in 30,00 miles.

Very very easy fix guys! And less than $30 too. Head to your dealer and order a "Blower motor resistor module". It'll be about the size of a playing card, twice as thick and coated in black plastic, with a plug on the end. Under the passenger side of the dash, near the blower motor, you'll recognize the plug. The module is held in by 2 8mm plugs, if I remember correctly. Simple remove-and-replace.

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like the resistor. Sounds pretty easy too. But, now it doesn't blow at all. Guess it could still be the resistor, huh? I'm gonna pull it and see if it looks or smells fried.

Peace Yall!
