Subject: 01 rear diff fell apart! IP: Logged
Message: 01 dakota with 85k miles of old man driving and a wimpy v6. Rear: 8.25" limited slip w/3.55 gears.
I just bought the truck from my father and decided to freshen up all the fluids with synthetic lubricants. When I pried the rear differential cover off and dumped to oil, I found three pieces of metal in the bottom of the housing on the magnetic strip. Turns out the three pieces used to be one piece, and the piece is one of the two clips that holds the clutches togethr in the unit. I took pictures and have had an engineer look at the part and we have identified a hairline crack in the other side of the broken clip in exactly the same spot. This is a faulty part, without a doubt.
Dayton (NJ) Dodge's response: it's got alot of miles on it and things break over time. The only remedy is to replace the whole differential unit. Keep using it until the other clip breaks and blows the whole unit and ruins the ring and pinion gears as well. So my next question to him was what is considered "alot of miles", and if that had anything to do with the 70k mile warrenty. I just dont understand how an inanimate piece of metal can be expected break so uniformly in 3 of it's 4 corners in 3 years of normal use. Should I see another dealer or just settle for the answer I got? I can't find an aftermarket assembly but I'm certainly not putting another one like that back in the truck if I plan on keeping it.

Message: The same thing just happened to me. I have an '04 QC 4x4 with 8300 miles on it and the rear diff broke the same way. The dealer fixed it under warranty, and they said they have heard of this happening in the past. Diamler/Chrysler has an 800 number that I called and let them know what I thought. I suggest you give them a call as well and let them know that Truck diff's SHOULDN'T break.

Message: I just went through this very problem the past 2 days and I am calling Dodge tomorrow morning this is BS.
Truck has 44,400 easy miles on it and dealer just replaced ALL the rear gears in it.
TCO on this truck is getting absurd 3rd warranty covered transmission/drivetrain fix in past 14 - 18 months.
I'll be trading/selling it as soon as the Dodge extended warranty expires...

Message: I had this problem with my 01 Dakota QC at about 60000km symptoms before that was a grinding feeling accelerating on turns mostly and uphill thought it might be wheel bearing. Anyway when I opened the rear diff same thing chunks of metal which acctually used to be a spacer used when installing the spider gears once gears are locked in place spacer is no longer needed but dodge leaves them in there ( Just another money making venture by dodge

Message: This happened on my '03 Dakota QC. The clips that hold the limited slip clutch packs together broke. I found the chunks when doing the fluid change at 12,000 miles. Dodge put in a whole new axle under warranty. Do not accept anything less. Those particles will destroy every bearing and race in that housing. I now have 24,000 on the truck and am almost dreading cracking the cover.....

Message: Well, I have a 2002 Quad Cab 4X4 with only 63000 kms that had to have the Ring & Pinions replaced in the rear. Now 3000 kms later I'm getting the same Whining noise that I got when I had to replace them again. I bought a new truck so i wouldn't have to deal with this crap. Hell I should of kept my car that had over 200,000 kms and no trouble
