Subject: Electrical shorting problem??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an '01 Dakota SLT 4X4 which recently developed an electrical problem. It seems to
happen only when it is wet outside, and when
I have the wipers set to any of the intermittent
speeds. All of the lights on the truck, instrument
panel included, flicker. When I set the wipers to
low or high speed the problems seems to go away.
This problem happened right after I was forced to
drive off from a curb and the truck experienced a
real good jolt.

Any ideas?!

Thanks in advance. :)

I found on my 99 rt a harness that run above the e-brake ratchet assembly was hitting the ratchet part. It was like the 4th of july creating sparks and everything. The worst part about it was the fact it was cutting the radio and amp out so no tunes THAT SUCKED. Anyway just something I found.

Good Luck

i have a major problem on my 98 dodge dakota. All my back lights keep shorting out which forces me to change the little tiny fuses under the hood and under the dash board. I've taken my truck to a dealership which cost me $70 bucks for them to say nothing is wrong with it (when obviously something is!), I've taken it to a local mechanic who said he can't find nothing wrong with it after one hour of looking at it, and I've taken it to my dad who said of course something is wrong with but it would take a loooong time to find out what. can someone please help this chick with my truck. First, the problem was my stereo light bulb (the stereo still worked), then my signals, then my brake lights, then my instrument panel is cutting out (and I change that fuse too!). Maybe someone can cut the time i have to wait for it to be fixed. Someone please help me!

Hi, girlygirl.

My problem turned out to be the central timing
unit. It's a computer module mounted inside the
truck behind a panel near the emergency brake.
At least that is where it is for the 2001 Dakota.

I was surprised that I did not get any good
replies in here and I did not find any real
good information either. I ended up going to
edmunds.com. They have forums in there too,
and that turned out to be the place to go.

Once I narrowed it down to the CTM I was lucky
enough to find one at a salvage yard for $100.
I put it in, and voila. No more flashing lights.
Price was right too because through the dealer
the module is around $300 plus installation costs.

One problem, though. I had to have the key fobs
re-programmed as they work through the CTM too.
Dealer did that for no charge.

Maybe that is your problem, but I don't know.
I never had to replace any fuses or relays. If
you have a manual with the ground locations for
the truck perhaps you could check them to make
sure that they are good connections.

Regards,

Brian

I have a 2002. The dealer told about the recall for 5spd trans, the clutch peddel comes up and hit the wires. when it wears thru, you lose your headlights witch is not good at night. THIS WAS A RECALL, if you one get checked

BrianC, after reading your problem I don't think
your problem is a "shorting" problem or you would
be blowing fuzes or worse yet having electricial
wires melting.

I'd start be looking at your ground jumpers.
Jumpers like from the battery to the engine, to
the frame, to the fire wall. One may have broke
loose.

You're seeing a electricial surge that the wiper
motor causes when it wipes one time, intermittent.
When you turn it on to low or high speed, the
same surge was there for a split second untill
the wiper got going.

Also check the wiper motors ground jumper. Wiper
motors and their related gear box are rubber
mounted for quite running. You'll see a ground
strap around one of the rubber mounts on most
wiper systems. Either take it off and clean it up
or do what I have done, put your own wire jumper
from the firewall to the motor housing.

Please let us all know what you find...

Good luck..

Opps, I guess I should have read all the threads.

Guess you found your problem BrianC.

Only question I have, why did a jolt make a CTM
go nuts?

Please let us know if your problem comes back.

isn't there a recall for the wiper motor shorting?

maybe the motor short is causing the problem you are talking about
