Message: I got a 02 3.9 SXT, I like it but already replaced the rotors with cross-drilled ones that cool better, no probs since. I was wondering how much it would cost if you brought it in to a suspension shop to have the ball joint work done, cause I like the truck otherwise, and Im not gonna do that suspension work myself.

Message: I've got to replace all four ball joints on my '99 dakota. I'd like to do it myself. Does any one know of a good site with good, clear, and free how to?

i have done the lower and the upper and its really easy just will take a weekend.
do the upper first.
Tools need for the job.
jack & jack stands. grinder. pitch fork. hammer and punch. and a couple wenches. o and a tub of ice cream for a job well done.
1. you will have to jack up the truck.
2. take off the wheel.
3.place jack under control arm and jack in till the arm is full resin.
4. take a praying fork and hammer it in between the spindle and the upper ball joint. you will have to Peri the spindle off the upper ball joint.
5. grind rivets down till there flush with the upper control arm.
6. hammer out the rivets. ( use a punch)
7. bolt on new upper ball joint.( i would up grade the bolts that came in the kit to grade 8.)
8. replace spindle and bolt it down.
9. go to the freezer and eat the last tub of ice cream!

the lower ball joints.
Tools for the job.
jack & jack stands. grinder. pitch fork. 3lb or more hammer. strong punches. drill and some good drill bits. and a couple wenches. O and a lot of ASPIRIN!
1. you will have to jack up the truck.
2. take off the wheel.
3. UN-bolt the upper ball joints and the brake line which i forgot to tell you on the first one.
4. you may have to modify the (praying fork.)
5. once you get the spindle free tie it up out of the way.
6. begin the long grinding process.
7. when the grinding is done the brutal hammer process begins support the lower control arm with the jack. (this is were the ASPIRIN comes in.)
8. drill a pilot hole in the rivet so you can place the punch in there.
9. dont quit! this will test you patience. once those revits move almost a millimeter they come out.
10. once the rivets come out start the reassembling process.
11. first bolt down the new lower ball joint to 95ftlbs.
12. than attach the spindle to the lower ball joint and than replace the upper ball joint and bolt down. (make sure you place the brake line back the way it was and spray brake clearner on the brakes.)
13. put the tire back on.
14 lower the jacks and remove and than take truck down your neighbor’s dirt rode at excess speed.
Assuming you didn’t OD on ASPIRIN!
