The e-mail I got back from the NHTSA says that the ball joint problem has been escalated to an engineering anaylsis number EA03023. This is for the Durango, but the Dakota is associated with this. This was upgraded in Nov of 2003. Do file complaints at the NHTSA. Their WEB site is

I own a '97 dakota cc 4x4 with 246,000 km (over 153,000mi) and I have only replaced the two lower ball joints. The top are still o.k. There is only a small amount of play and I have no premature tire ware. I was supprised to hear of the trouble the new ones have had. Maybe because mine is the first year the new style came out, DC used the heavier bjoints found in the full size, and now use cheaper once to cut costs. I do admit that the front brakes/rotors are crap!! Can't keep OEM ones from warping. Hopefully there are good aftermarket ones avaliable.
