I recently bought a 1995 3.9L v6 magnum 4 speed
automatic with overdrive, dakota.
The first week I owned
it, it failed to start. There was
no noise from the engine compartment, and I shifted from park to nuetral and back again
to make sure it truly was in park. It still didnt
work. I was in a sears automotive parking lot(lucky me...not), and after diagnosis they
replaced the starter. About 50 miles
later It wouldnt start in park., it wouldnt even
try to turn over. I shifted from park to neutral
and it started perfectly on the first try, as long as I started it from neutral. This seems to be happening once every 40-50 miles in all weather conditions, on flat roads and hills (with the parking break holding the weight of the truck,
not the trans).
Is this a sign that the transmission is going to
have serious problems soon?
Any idea what the problem is?
Did I really need a new starter and since it
is still under warranty, do I have any recourse
with Sears for getting part of the $240 it cost
back?
I also noticed that the engine temperature guage didnt move at all after 20 miles of freeway driving at 50-60MPH with O/D on the last time
it wouldnt start from park. Im guessing this
is a seperate problem, right?

Check the park/neutral safety switch. It only allows the truck to start in park or neutral. It's not uncommon for the switch (in all brand of vehicles) to go bad and only start in neutral.Good luck.

my 1999 dodge ram rwd 1500 v8 magnum isnt starting in park but starts in nutral what should i do
