I'm glad I found this message board because I have had similar problems with my 99 Dakoda 4x4.
At 21K miles - replace both lower ball joints
31K - replaced both upper control arms
41K - replaced steering knuckle (even though my complaint was the same as previous complaints - sounds like a walnut bouncing around somewhere in the drivers side front.
In April 2001 I called Chrysler and asked them if they could help me out with this problem in the future. They said they would review the problems on a case by case basis.
Now at 42K miles, my upper controls are gone again, both tie rods are junk, the drivers side front tire is bald on the inside (all others are still good)
I called Chrysler yesterday and they told my to jump in a lake!
My Toyota truck went 160K with one extra set of ball joints - What gives? Is anything being done about this?
Any suggestions or names and addresses to write to would be greatly appreciated.

I have an '01 Dak reg cab 4x4 with 38000 miles on it, and wish I never got involved with it! I have had front end work after front end work. New upper ball joints(33000 miles), new power steering rack and intermediate shaft(35000 miles),New shocks and bushings(36500 miles)and finally I cannot drive my truck(38000 miles). I turned left heard a loud pop, my steering wheel stayed cocked to the left even when driving straight!? The dealer told me it is not safe to drive. Also that the steering rack is bad, after 5000 miles?! Also was informed that 187 steering units wre on back order.

Hey guys i found out what happened now. My front passenger side whell bearing went out at 70,000 miles. It cost 1500 to get it fixed this time. That makes 3000 in less than 3 months. I want to get it paid off so i can get rid of it before i spend to much more on it.

My problem is exactly the same as Mike Rae's. exact same problems down to the wear on the drivers side tire. (Mine is on the outside though) I finally had enough of it yesterady and took it to an independant shop. He spent 15 minutes with it on the rack before he found the problem, but we still don't know the cause. It seems when the front end is jacked up the passengers side suspension hangs all the way down until the upper control arm hits the bump stop, however the drivers side will not come all the way down. It sits about 1"-1.5" above the bump stop. He stated he had no way of knowing why it was like that but it could be a bent control arm or possibly a bent torsion bar. What the sound you are hearing is the lower control arm hitting the bump stop. ( at least that is the problem in my case) I am gonna take it to the dealership and see if they will do something wbout it since I brought it in the first time before the warranty ran out and they claimed to have fixed the problem. But with 44,000 miles I may have to foot the bill myself. Ill keep you posted.

My 1999 4x4 extended cab recently started making a dragging type sound from the front end. It only makes the sound on cold mornings and stops within three to four miles of driving, or immediately after I shift the transfer case into four wheel high for about a minute. No noise at all after that. Any suggestions or similar problems?
