Just found this problem on my '98 V6 3.9 2WD. Midas wanted $1400 to drill & re-tap 2 bolts on each side. Took the truck to my local mechanic, and he did it for $393.

I have a 98 Dakota, now with +180K miles. Around 70K, I noticed an exaust sound and dismissed it, then around 100K it got worse. The dealership told me the bolts had rusted off and that it would be about $600 per side to fix, as my warranty was long expired. I never did anything about it. Its annoying but the truck still runs OK. Any ideas on the least expensive / best value way to fix would be appreciated.

take it to a family owned shop or something like that. I wouldnt take it to any big named garage because they take advantage of the labor costs. I think it cost me like a little under 200 bucks for the dude to drill out like 3 or 4 bolts. I know it had to suck but thats why I didnt do it! plus they replaced all the bolts and put my headers on. nice to know shops like that.
