The seal lip goes in, towards the grease. This keeps the grease from leaking out. If I were running the Baja 1000, I'd turn them around to keep the sand out.

The rubber part of the seal goes in, towards the bearings. In most mechanical applications, the seal lip goes toward the lubricant to "seal" it from leaking out. In very dirty conditions, it is more important to keep the contaminant out than to lose a small amount of the lubricant. In these cases, the seal would face out to keep the contaminants out of the lubrication and the bearings. In some machinery, there are two seals back to back, one in, one out, lube in, dirt out.

You're welcome. One more thing. NEVER install an oil seal without lubricating the rubber seal lip. Put a little grease on you finger and rub it on the lip. A dry seal on a dry shaft will quickley burn up the seal. This is especially important in high speed applications such as crankshafts.
