Subject: getting car into Park IP: Logged
Message: my transmission started doing the weird shifting between first and second in my 99 Dakota R/T. When I got it to my house I couldn't shift it into park. When I put it into park it was in reverse. I could not move the shifter any farther down for it to get out of reverse. Now I have to put it in nuetral and put the parking break on to park. I recently had all four new ball hoints put on buy a local mechanic. Could the mechancic have done something to the shifter when he replaced the ball joints; is the shifter the same thing as the upper control arm which is connected to the ball Joints? Any help greatly appreciated

Message: ball joints are nin the front suspension, the transmission is behind the engine, and the two in no way are connectetd to one another, but you need both to make your truck go. Most likely your transmission cable is either stretched to the point of breaking like mine did or the connection between the cable and the transmission has slipped a bit, for a quality tech, the bad cable takes about 1- 1 1/4 hr, and the slipped cable can take only about 15 or 20 minutes to fix.
