Chrysler recalls 2.7 million older vehicles

Updated: 6:07 p.m. ET Jan. 13, 2004AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group is recalling 2.7 million older model vehicles to replace or repair the floor-mounted shifter assembly.

Chrysler said Tuesday that an internal investigation showed that when the floor-mounted shifter button is depressed and pulled with excessive force when the key is not in the ignition, the vehicle's ignition interlock system could become inoperative. That could cause the vehicle to move.

Vehicles affected by the recall include the 1995-1999 Chrysler Cirrus, Dodge Stratus and Plymouth Breeze; 1996-1999 Sebring convertibles; and 1993-1999 Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Dodge Intrepid and Eagle Vision.
Chrysler said the potential malfunction is likely to be most prevalent in vehicles that have had multiple drivers, such as those in commercial or rental fleets because of additional use. The automaker estimates about 10 percent of the 2.7 million vehicles is likely to be affected.
Chrysler said it will install stronger components to better withstand excessive force on the shifter.

Talked to Dodge Customer Service today ((800) 992-1997) about the ball joint fiasco. They explained to me that Dodge is currently working with the NHTSA to resolve this problem FOR THE DURANGO ONLY!!!! When I commented that the DAK and DURANGO had the same front suspension, they said that Dodge has no plans to include the DAK in the investigation with the NHTSA. Everyone must call the NHTSA and DODGE and voice your concerns!!!!! The NHTSA phone number is (800-424-9393).

I own a 2000 dakota with a 3.9 liter engine, it is a 4x4 and an auto trans. My question is do all daks have the ball joint issue? also i have a possible u-joint type sqeak in the front end of the truck, has anyone had this and if so what is it?
