I have nothing good to say about Christopher Dodge in Denver Colo. they replaced my upper and lower ball joints, I heard a distinct clunking sound at 13.000 miles, they changed them four times and everytime denied there was a problem untill the warrenty was out.

I replaced the upper and lower ball joints at 70,000. I used Moog parts with grease fittings.
These should last a long time. Chrysler wouldn't admit to any warranty or fault. Grease fitting swould have prevented the problem. The 2002's still have no fittings. The tie rod ends have fittings. They are still good at 85,000. I replaced the shocks with Gabriel Lt gas. I love the truck, but Chryslers attitude sucks.

Same ball joint problem and the brake rotors are shot too. Are there any suggestions on what else to replace at this time (shocks, struts, upgrades). I have been quoted around $1000 for the job with parts. I would like to do it myself, but are there any snags such as the original ball joint being rivited on. I would like any advice from anyone who has done this job themselves

I have the same problem as everyone else it seems. I have a 1997 Dakota SLT 4X4 5.2 liter.Ball joints wore out in March 2001 and were replaced at the dealership under ext warranty. Now the alignment shop said they are bad and need replaced. The truck has been good overall, but this ball joint problems is excessive.

Do yourself a favor and don't let the dealer put the factory ball joints back. Get Moog Ball joints that have grease fittings. Then you won't have to replace them again.

If you have had to replace your ball joints prematurely, you need to contact NHTSA and file a complaint. There is an ongoing investigation on this problem. If a recall is ordered by them you will get reimbursed all your repair costs as long as you have receipts.

Lower ball joints on my 1997 failed at 49,000 miles. I do my own work and found that the grease seals had deteriorated and allowed grease to escape and water to enter the ball joints. Seals on the upper joints were still OK but I replaced all joints with TRW aftermarket joints. Removing the riveted joints required a lot of elbow grease. Everything on this truck is cheap and designed to wear out.

97 cc 5.2 replaced ball joints at around 55,000 miles. Beginning to regret getting this truck even though it looks so clean.
