Message: Maybe we could all chip in and bulk mail the message threads with all our quality complaints to all the Dodge dealerships addressed to the Service Manager and all the Dodge board members, CEO, CFO along with a sweet message that our customer loyalty is rapidly vaporizing. Then tell them we could send a copy to everyone in our email address books and ask them to pass it on in a likewise fashion and create a grass roots campaign against Daimler/Chrysler. Perhaps pay for an advertising spot at NASCAR events with the URL to this conversation area?

IF YOU DON"T LIKE THE PRODUCT DON'T BUY IT. NOBODY HELD A SHOTGUN TO MY HEAD WHEN I BOUGHT MY TRUCK.

Message: That made no sense what you said. Buying a car is more than say, buying a pair of sunglasses. I loved my truck when I bought it and still do. But if the freakin ball joints are junk, not just on mine, but all dakotas and durangos, don't you think Chrysler should stop hiding behind their desks and do something about it?? Taking action wont' look bad for us, but Dodge. It's going to be just like the Ford/Firestone scenario, nothing will be done until a life is lost. Sad.

Message: True. But most people put more thought into buying dinner than they do buying a vehicle. Then when they discover their choice has flaws, they get all pissy.
I've owned 22 vehicles in my lifetime and every one of them had problems or had parts break prematurely. The Dakota is not the first nor will it be the last truck to eat ball joints for breakfast. All vehicles are money pits that eventually wear out.
Trying to blackmail DC into doing something will only earn the wrath of their lawyers. It's one thing to get pissy and send sh1tty grams to some customer service mail bot. It's another to take out ads at public events and make accusations about culpibility.

Message: BLACKMAIL???? ACCUSATIONS ABOUT CULPABILITY???? You gotta get a clue there fella. You go ahead and roll over and play dead while Dodge goes on vacation with your money. Not me (although I doubt I'd take part in the NASCAR ads thing -- I think that's quite a pipedream ... would never come to fruition) .... I've entered my information with the NHTSA (800-424-9393) and with Dodge Corporate Customer Service (as everyone with these premature failure probs should). If Dodge (or nearly any other company these days) is given the ability to take advantage of you, they will. WHY??? Because of people like 'OK'!!!!! And yes, for the record ... I am a bit "Pissy" about buying a $31,000 truck that has more than a handful of very expensive parts that were designed and manufactured to last less than 30,000 miles. Why shouldn't I be pissy? So, come on everyone ... call NHTSA and Dodge Corporate and let's get something done.

Message: Thanks for your polite response and I do have a clue. I also have a Dakota with crap ball joints so I'm in this as much as anyone. :p What you did is the appropriate way of lodging a complaint. You piss and moan to the manufacturer and the government agency charged with enforcing highway safety. The NHTSA is aware of the problem and is investigating.
Believe me, the dealers know about the problem but they can't replace everybodies ball joints because they would go broke.
Taking an ad out at a NASCAR event for every bubba and his sister/wife to see is not an appropriate course of action. It could be called slander and would make the cost of new ball joints roughly the same as your lawyers hourly court fee.
Bottom line...caveat emptor.

Message: Whatever comes out of it, it's going to really hurt Dodge. How many new families that are looking for that used SUV are going to jump in a Durango when they do the research on it and see the ball joints are faulty? Or the guy going to buy the used midsize truck and recently watched the CBS news on the Dakotas? Dodge needs to come out and do or say something at least.

Message: My 2000 Quad Cab has already had a ball joint replaced under warranty (35,000 miles) and the rear differential self-destructed at 53,000 miles.
The rear differentials supplied by Dana are absolute junk. Expect problems at some point.
The most damage I can do to DaimlerChrysler is to simply not ever purchase another one of their poorly made products. They lost a customer for life. Unfortunately, by the time they figure it out, they'll be going out of business. That'd be fine with me, though.

Message: Just called to check on the ticket I entered. No probs. You can also go to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ to file a defect complaint. Or call 1-888-327-4236 ... it all goes to the same place (NHTSA). Better yet ... file your information with all of the above. :o)

Message: Just called again as a question came to mind. Why is the Durango being investigated, but according to Dodge, the Dakota is not (as of 1/16/04)? Nicole explained to me that the investigations are triggered by their website traffic and calls. I explained that the front suspension of a Durango is the same as a Dakota; Nicole explained to me that, unless there are complaints on the Dakota, only the Durango will be investigated, even if they are identical!!!!!
I did a subsequent search on NHTSA.org and found only 39 complaints on '02 Dakotas (QC's included)!!!!!!! Come on!!!!! If you've had a ball joint failure, register it!!!! Or we are all stuck with this crap from Dodge.
OOOOOOHHHHHHH ... they make me so mad!!!!!!!!!

Message: I had a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport and smashed head-first into a drunk driver that fell asleep at the wheel. She was three times the legal limit and we were both travelling at approximately the speed limit (About 50 MPH). My airbag DID NOT deploy. I attribute my survival to the fact that I hit her at a slight angle and her car was lighter then my truck. But nonetheless, my 1998 Airbag did not deply and I just about ate my steering wheel because I'm a little taller then most and my seatbelt rides low. Although I stand by Dodge trucks, (why else did I go right out and buy another one?)I think that DC needs to address this situation. Complaints filed have led nowhere and I have given up. I stand by Dodge but I do not stand by their airbags.
