My brother-in-law owns a 98 Durango with aprx. 110,000 miles on it. Every so often while on the road or at a stop light, the engine will stutter. If you happen to be on the highway driving, it will lose a significant amount of power and the Durango will jerk like its trying to get power. Then within 10 secs, it will return to normal. He brought it in to a local mechanic who tuned it up but said he couldn't find any problems as to what was causing it. Anyone know what it is? Expensive fix? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like an injector is failing intermittently. It could be a connector issue. One at a time, unplug each injector and look at the plug/socket. Make sure they're clean. He might want to have a shop perform a flush of the injectors.

What esxactly was "tuned up"? Aside from replacing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor every so often, there really isn't much to tune up. Not like the old days where you could really mess things up with mixture settings, timing, dwell, etc.

Thanks for the information! I'm not sure what exactly was tuned up, just what I was told. I know he had the plugs changed. It comes really close to stalling every time before returning to normal. One week it's pretty bad, the next week it barely happens. The mechanic did check the fuel injectors, maybe he didn't do a good enough job??? Again, thanks for the help. It's appreciated.
