Subject: Ticking IP: Logged
Message: I have a ticking in or near my engine.
The ticking is intermittent during idle (ticks once then wont tick for 15 seconds, then ticks in 2 seconds)
During driving the ticking is only on acceleration.
Any thoughts? Besides piston slap or valves.

Message: its not the injectors. if it were it would be a steady continuous tick. who cares anyway? does it affect the performance of your truck. probably not. if it gets worse then start to worry. and its a truck rally it dont baby it.

Message: My engine started ticking at about 6,000 miles. Has gotten progressively worse over the last 15,000 miles (can hear it from about 25 feet away -- w/ a Magnaflow exhaust). Dealership says it's normal for a Dodge engine to tick.

Message: Ok, after taking my truck to the dealer for the 60,000 mile service ($1100.00, f*ckers) they found the source of the ticking and it was my timing belt tensioner. Replaced for $50 with the added care warrenty. Problem solved, for now.

Message: My 99 5.2L 4x4 has same tic, brought it in under warr when it was 3 mos. old and they said it was normal EGR solenoid sound. It did not start to do it until it was 3 mos. old. Still doing it now and it has 40K on it. Another Dakota added feature.

Message: I got a 97. My does a ticking sound similar to Kyle's. I replaced the timing chain. It fixed the rattling when the truck is parked just idling. But there is still another ticking, probably a loose heat shield or some bull sh*t like that.

Message: My noise comes at the same times as the original poster, only it's not a tick, it's a really annoying rattle. Sounds like a bearing in the trans or transfer case. Only at idle, or under acceleration. Comes and goes at idle, really embarrassing at the bank's drive-thru. Anyone else have this prob? I have heard it on another 4x4 Dak at a stoplight once. RATTLERATTLE then quiet, then repeat. Mine's a 98 3.9 4x4.
