Message: There are clips......
I don't think they could loosen, but I have heard of them not being installed.

Message: that rattle that sounds like your brakes is probably the lower ball joints getting ready to fail.

Message: Cheap test: Put a jack stand under one (or both sides) of the front end so you have at least one front tire off the ground. Lay underneath while a friend shakes the sh!t out of the tire. Listen for rattle noise. If you can't reproduce the noise it may be because the jack stand is supporting the weight normally on that part of the front end. In this case visual inspection and may be your only tool. If you don't find a "sure thing" and even if you do you might want to let a pro check it out. Nobody likes to have a tire fly off at 75 mph.

Message: It is the clip---DC was too cheap to make them out of stainless steel..and guess what? They rust---and fail...and break...so if you hear a rattling/clunking sound...it is the spring/clip that holds the break pad metal backing solid inside the caliper. You have to get them replaced. One suggestion---before the new ones go in---paint them with a rust-resistant ceramic paint. That will retard the new ones corroding and snapping in two...

Message: Hello, I have a 96 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 4x2 with fornt disk, rear drum, & ABS. I get a squeal sound coming from the disks. It may be warped rotors, but not really sure...yet. One thing that is for sure, is that when I brake, there is a rattle from the front. When braking is applied, the squeal goes away. When going over 65 mph. the rattle increases.

Message: I should also add. 6 months ago I had to get my rotors cut by the dealership, because I couldn't get brand new rotor&assembly that day, and the front brakes were just a hassle when it came to a bumpy ride while braking. The steering wheel and brake pedal feel like an enjoyment device. I have checked and Dodge did not merge with Goodvibrations Co. In 1 year owning this truck. it's the 2nd time I will have to get work done with the front disks. One question is, where can I get stainless steel slotted rotors? 1996 Dodge Dakota 4x2 with ABS. I thought it was all wheel ABS but everyone is telling me it's only front wheels that have the ABS and the drums are not. The rear has 9 inch drums. The front disks, from what I've been told needs a hub assembly to come with the rotors.
