Message: Drop the oil pan? You mean drain the oil pan!
Mr Lube do not drop the pan!! Remove drain plug on pan only. Nine times out of ten oil comes out so have something that holds at least 6 quarts under there.

Message: Simple job on a slightly warm engine.
1. Reach up there and remove the oil filter. Where it is depends on what engine you have.
2. Clean up all the spilled oil that comes from mounting the filter in a crappy place/angle.
3. Pour approximatly 1/3-1/2 qt of oil into the filter. Spread a little oil on the rubber filter gasket, and re-install the filter.
4. Place a catch basin underneath the oil pan, and remove the drain plug. When oil stops dripping out, put the plug back in.
5. Pour in the required amount of whatever oil you choose. Start the engine and let it run until the pressure comes up. Check for leaks. Drink a beer.
Fram filters are the cheapest for a reason. You get what you pay for. If you're really interested, go here: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

Message: Stop, that sounds like a good idea! I have been changing my own oil for the last 30 + years and I dreaded when it was time to change my DAKs oil due to the placement of the oil filter and the mess it would make. I'm going to try your suggestion next time around. Thanks!

That oil filter study you pointed our has not been updated since "last updated 05/25/99" ... or 3 1/2 years ago. Many things have changed since then.

Message: Unfortunately for you Linda, the chances of the crank grabbing the dipstick are about 1 in a billion or so. What probably happened was crank shifted when the bearings burned up from lack of oil. It's not something that would happen on its' own. You did however change the oil and leave the other oil filter o ring on the engine. That now makes you liable for the damage to the engine. I have seen the same thing happen more than once before. Yes it a very expensive mistake, but I'm sure it won't be a mistake you make twice. Sorry.

Message: Sorry to hear about the blown engine, try getting a rebuilt engine $1500-2000 or a used engine from a salvage yard $1000-1500. $1000-2000 should cover labor and all the extras that go into replacing the engine.
Do you know for a fact that the old seal was stuck to the block causing the oil to leak past the 2 seals? Was it leaking after the oil change or did the engine just lockup? Did you check the oil level before taking it the the dealer and was it full or low? It was making noise before the oil change so maybe it was going to blow whether the oil was changed or not? Point I am trying to make is that if you went to the dealer and said "I just changed my oil and the engine is dead" they will probably come up with some story to justify making you pay for the repair. If you know that you made a mistake then it's time to break out the check book, but maybe they are trying to pull one over on you.
I work alot on vehicles and know when they are shooting me a line of BS, and I have heard alot of BS come from service departments. Probably would have spent thousands of $ if I didn't know they were trying to pull a fast one.
The dipstick grabbing the crankshaft story is questionable, especially since you noted that it was $400.00 to pull the motor "since the dipstick was wrapped around so much". It wouldn't be any harder to pull the engine either way. Ask to see the engine and go over and pull the dipstick out, probably not wrapped around the crank, then look at the oil filter and see if it's still on the engine, if so pull it off and see if the old seal is stuck to the block. I would hate to see you pay $6000 for something that should be covered by the warranty. Bring someone along as a witness, preferrably a guy with mechanical knowledge, and check out their story.
Let's hope you did the oil change correctly and can catch the dealer in the middle of a lie, might just save you $6000.
