Message: Great posts Robert ... yes, I did, in a very sarcastic way, agree with you (poking fun at the dealerships and their wicked ways). Just erks me how we've all been checking balljoints the same way for how many decades and then Mopar comes up with some ridiculous procedure that doesn't make sense. I'll just check them my way (the world's way) and take it to the dealer when they're bad ... if they say they aren't bad, then the truck will just sit on their lot til they decide to fix it. :o)
I'm really looking forward to replacing a lot of the factory JUNK on my truck when the warranty runs out. I entered a ticket with the NHTSA (as everyone with these problems should - 800-424-9393), in the hopes that Dodge will actually step up to the plate and put BETTER balljoints in, instead of the same crappy ones. I doubt it .. but a man can dream, right?
Take care,
Eric - http://photos.yahoo.com/jes_96

yawn, 0630, to early for this, but! just saw on local news that dakota and durango ( basicly the same if no body on) seems that there is now a major problem with the ball joints. any idea how long it will take them to design, manufacture, then get them out so we can pay out the ass for labor to get them installed?

Message: i heard this one this site somewhere.
parking break on
jack under suspension arm
jack up until tire is just off the ground
try to pull and push the top of the tire out or in.
if the tire moves much at all you need new ball joints or some other part of the suspention is loose
hope that helps

Message: I dont think they are too hard to do it just takes a while. If you do a search on it in these forums there is some people who have websites that show you how to do it step by step with pictures.

Message: Does this apply?
My new o3 sxt, 4x with 13k mi bounces outta controll on irregular road surfaces, dealer replaced leaking shocks, 500mi later front driver shock leaking again (pass side soon to follow) going in for another warranty replacement in a few days (back order). I have no faith in the third set lasting more than another 500mi.
It there a 3 srtike rule for this type of problem? No modifications to the DOdGe yet.
I dont drive it hard or do any real wheeling other than a dirt road.

Message: yea the is a federal lemon law. look it up on the government web site. or ask at the dealer...like they would tell you. my dodge is one electrical problem away from being a lemon. no more dodges for me. it'a shame theme englines and cab configurations couldn't have been built better. :/ o well.

Message: Was just told that my lower passenger-side ball joint was too far gone, and needed to be replaced. That, and I have play in the inner tie rod end. I've got the parts (<$80 for lower ball joint and inner tie rod end at O'Reilly auto parts), now I just need to do it.
The sad thing is that neither Chiltons nor AllDataDIY.com has information on how to replace either of them. For the lower ball joint, it just says to remove/install the lower control arm. For the inner tie rod end, I'm supposed to pull the whole damned rack-and-pinion assembly. Fat chance on either one.
Looking for online sites which show how to do this. I've got a '98 CC with the 3.9l V6 and about 85k miles. I replaced the right front bearing/hub about 6k miles ago.

Message: our 2002 dodge dakota had the upper ball joints replaced at around 40000 miles that is when dodge did the recall and it was covered now at 52000 miles the lower ball joints need to be replaced ....i called dodge at 1800 853 1403 and they said they wont recall the lower ball joints on all the daks until they get more complaints!! so anyone with this same problem call them up even if you have already paid out of pocket you will get reimbursed.

Message: I just had my lower ball joints replaced on my 2004 Dak, only 32,000 miles. Dodge said they had alot of play in them. Called up Chrysler b/c I am out of warranty, no help there. Took it to my body shop and they did it for $150/wheel including parts (the lower ball joint costs $99 each from Chrysler). Dodge wanted $600 for both. If you take it elsewhere to be installed, just a heads up they need to press out the old and press in the new (not all shops have the press).

Message: In my case, I took my '98 Dakota to a guy who does suspension and exhaust work. He took a torch and burned the old rivets out. The Moog replacement ball joints have grade 8 bolts instead of rivets, and have grease ports on them.
I have had to replace 3 out of the 4. If any of the Moogs need replacement, I can do that myself.
Why Chrysler couldn't just put decent ones in there, with bolts holding them in place, to begin with, is beyond me. Surely they couldn't be THAT much more expensive than the ones they used.

Message: '01 2wd 4.7 quad 5spd: I replaced the uppers at 55,000 with NAPA greasables. I have a good compressor and a chatter gun for chiseling off the rivet heads, and the job wasn't too bad. Now at 77,000 I'm doing the lowers and the rivet heads came off easy enough but I'm having trouble driving the rivet shafts out of the four holes in the control arms. I don't have access to a torch so it looks like time to break out the drill. groan!! Anyone else have this problem? ;^}
