Subject: crank position sensor can cause TCM code IP: Logged
Message: I have a 200 4.7 4x4 and the crank position sensor went out, and at the same time the tranny locked itself in 3rd gear. I am no longer under warranty, so I took it to my mechanic, who replaced the CPS and said I needed a new tranny control module as well. You have to go to the dealer for this, and it turns out that the TCM needs a voltage reading from the CPS, so if it goes out, the TCM will put the tranny in limp mode. My mechanic did not know this, and luckily the dealer was straight. Once the CPS was replaced, the tranny shifted but the MIL light was stil on, as the CPS was sending the voltage to the TCM once again. Bottom line: 1.5 days of hassle, but didn't need a $350 TCM...

Message: that'll teach ya to go to one of them uneducted guys that hangs a sign in his garage, go to a dealer for MIL throws, I'll garuntee that in most cases,it'll get fixed faster and cheaper. You almost has to pay $350 more cause the dumbazz you went to knew not of what he was speaking.

Message: Well, lets not go that far...It took 3 mechanics at the dealership to figure out that the TCM and PCM were separate modules and whether or not it was covered under warranty...Other than that, I agree with you!

Message: Those were not dealership technicians. They may have been the loudmouth oil changers or inexeperienced technicians, but real dealerships technicians will never have TCM and PCM confusion like you described.
