I bought my 2002 Dakota QC 4x4 in April 2002. eversince it has been a nightmare. The truck will like "trip"on itself from a complete stop. When i attempt to accelerate the engine makes a loud "clunking" noise and it is as if it ran out of gas type of feeling....kind of a puttter. It will last for 8-10 seconds. Any ideas? it is a 3.9L v-6

I have a similiar problem with my new 2003 4x2 QC. It got so bad at one point that it actually started rolling backwards at a stop sign because stepping on the gas caused it to sputter and just about stall. I've taken it to the dealer for several attemps at a fix but they seem lost. I keep getting the same answer, "there are no faults in the computer". Do they even employ any of the old type mechanics that use their brains instead of having a computer tell them a problem?

I bought a 2002 Dakota R/T and from day one it has also been a nightmare. The auto tranny stumbles on once and a while when coming to a stop. The truck has numerous other problems as well. The dealer can't find the problems, the computer says the truck is fine.

I have a 2003 Dakota Club Cab 4X4 with a 3.9 V6. I have experienced the same problems with the "sputtering" or popping back through the throttle body. The dealer thinks I'm crazy because there are not any computer codes stored. Also the tranny stumbles and shutters between shifts. As I type this the truck is at the dealer for troubleshooting for the third time. So far this has been the worst truck I have ever owned. I hope it gets better because I like the style of the Dakota. If anyone has a answer please let me know. If I find a solution I will post it.

I have 1998 Dakota that I purchased new, and it has been great with a few exceptions. It recently has started 'stumbling' at various speeds, acting like it was starving for gas. Sometimes it would die completely and not re-start for 10 minutes or better, but it would always restart. Finally took it to a dealership (today), and after some time, they told me it was a power steering control module causing the problem!! ($900 to fix!) Supposed to get it back Friday Jan 2, 2004. I'll let you all know!!!

My brother in law has had the engine stumbling problem in his Durango. Took it to a mechanic and discovered it was the Oxygen Sensor. It's been fine since.

Hopefully that solves it. His bogged down going 70 mph on the expressway, not just under 30 mph. But it usually happened when at stoplights. If the oxygen sensor is a no fix, I've also been told on here to have your fuel injectors flushed.

I Have a 99, 3.9,4x4

The 3.9 isnt the smoothest running engine at the best of time, small surges in RPM are noted at idle all the time ,but should cause no real performance problem.

My truck would hesitate, ping, backfire and stall.
Only when it was below freezing, and only after it warmmed up.The fault code was "intermittant cam or crank sensor"

The 3.9 uses both the cam and crank sensors to set fuel injector pulse and timeing.

The engine computer also runs in a open and closed loop,During warm up(open loop) a limited number of sensors(about 10)are used with a pre set program in the computer.

After warm up(closed loop) the computer takes inputs from more than 12 different sensors.
The system also uses a "data bus" that uses one wire to carry many different signals at the same time.
Any hicup in a sensor, or the main engine computer ,or the order it gets it information from the data bus and the system gets confused. It will adjust the wrong thing at the wrong time thus your engine runs like crap.

Dose anyone know if the PCM should default to the preset(open loop)program and run correctly if a problem is sensed.Or did the morons that designed this night mare figure nothing would ever go wronggggggggggggggggggggg??????

BDE interesting post I didn't realize the 3.9 was so frail. I know ever since I bought my 99 when parked and backing up the engine wants to stall all the time until I start going froward. Damndest thing. That's both doing this from sitting overnight to coming back 10 minutes after having just drove it.

I have a '95 dakota 4x4 and occasionally, when I downshift (automaticc trans) I hear popping noises like it wants to backfire. Consumer report digest has a history for these truck and it said that the drive train control module needs to be reset or changed. I have not changed it yet, but it may be worth taking a look at it.
Hope this helps.

Hey Nasty Nate, I got the same problem with my 03 Dakota SXT,3.9 5 speed. It will POP back in the air intake when you shift from 1-2 2-3 with some hard accelation(not racing it or nothing like that) but trying to get up to highway speed.I have had this truck to the dealer 4 times for this and it is still doing it. They have replaced the distributor, PCM. They test drive it, and of course it won't do it. Check your air filter and see how bad it looks, and keep the air filter. If they(dealer)replaces the filter you won't get it back. I got this truck used but with only 2827 miles on it. I think this might be one of those LEMONS but don't know for sure. Got a lawyer on this, I am tired of messing with it. Good luck with yours.

Well Kenny, Just show him all the posts here and let him decide if he wants to fight with these problems also.

I for one will never buy a new dodge again other than maybe a Viper (which they seem to put more thought into designing than anything else). The Nissan Titan is a decent truck, but I wont buy one since they dont have manual tranny opt (thanks Yuppies for ruining trucks for people that actually USE them). So if I get another domestic its a F-250SD. Otherwise I'm gonna see how much problem getting a Toyota LC78 imported here.

desertrat, only way to be happy with a 3.9 is with a 5 speed, all automatics i've driven are slugs, i'm happy with my 5 speed i get up and go efficiently. I only have 2wd so my gas is a consistant 18-20 mpg. i got 60000 i run synthetic oil, still got a tap but am told by the dealer they all have that and there's nothing to do about it. only thing i've done motor wise is plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. they get small cracks in the cap and run like crap in the rain. and i did a serpentine belt. I can't complain one bit. good luck with yours
