If you got 140,000 miles out of a Dodge truck, you are very lucky. I anticipate, based on present deterioration of my Dakota, a life span of about 80,000 to 100,000 miles before it gets towed to the junkyard.

My father in law has about 180,000 on his 97 Ram 4x4 and is in better shape than mine. My truck still looks great but I'm getting all of these noises now.

I have a 2001 Dakota 4x4 and I've also had the "whirring / winding" sound when I speed up and slow down. I haven't noticed much noise when turning except when in 4x4 at slow speeds. Then there's a disgusting crunch / grinding noise that can happen. My brother who is a dodge salesman tells me that the Crunch / grinding noise is normal for a 4x4 at slow speeds in a sharp turn. I don't know if I believe him...anybody have any hints as to what might be going on with the whirring noise?

Sounds like your front CV joints are going. Same thing happened on my Grand Cherokee.
Although, keep in mind that Dodge trucks are built with very poor drive trains and suspensions, so "normal" could be true in this case.
I will never buy another product made by DCC.

We took our 2003 Dakota Quad (4.7 litre, limited slip) in for a run of the mill oil change, tire rotation and front/rear diff lube change (21,000km). Turns out that one of the pins holding the clutch packs in place had come out and now it is sitting in the dealers shop waiting for a new rear end. The only real hint we had was an odd noise sometimes on cornering.

I was told by one of the mechanics that the LS rear ends are very touchy and the we should change the lube every year (it's about 16 months old now) and coast around corners, especially hills!?!? He also told me he did another one just recently when the owner brought it in for an ABS light (debris damaged a wheel speed sensor).

The service guy told me it could have locked up while driving down the highway. Considering that could have been at 120 km/h later that day, we are glad we took it in.

The long and short of it is that we are without our truck for a week or more waiting for parts and we are wondering what kind of mistake we made. Based on what we learned yesterday and this website, it sounds like DC has a problem with this LS design.

Like Dan, my 03 Dakota Quad Sport Plus without noise or warning at 15,500 miles showed a brake light, then ABS light, then check engine light while odometer and speedometer failed. Only tach and other gauges remained. Under warranty, Dealer found metal all over wheel speed sensor and inside rear differential while the case was coming apart. Amazing that it didnt lock up.

Add mine to the list. 2000 Dakota Quad LS. I bought it new. This truck has only 35,000 miles on it. Never pulled anything. Just had to change my Diff also. It was making a whooping sound in the turns. When I asked why it would break at such a low millage, the service rep tried to get the someone to come out and talk to me. Funney, everyone was busy. They have been for three days now. I'll just keep calling every day tell I get an answer (I know the answer). Cost me $1,090 with a 10% discount! Whooopee!

I have a 95 dakota and I just got it. It used to be my grampa's and I know he didn't take too good of care of it. Right now me and my dad are having problems with it. The car will go in reverse fine, but for some reason when we try to move the car forward, the back wheels lock up and will not move. I think it might have to do with differentials, but I'm not really sure. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. It would be much appreciated.

Actually mine is a Ram Van B2500 but same drivetrain as most of your Dakotas 318 / 46 re trans & 9.25 diff. Differential is now making loud whirring noise - bad pinion bearings I suspect. Sad to see how many bad units Dodge had made. Next time I may buy a Toyota !

I have a 2001 ( mf date of 07,00) and the left front hub was bad i replaced that hoping that was the noise then that didn't so i checked further and thought the cv shaft at the diff side had to much play.. replaced the cv shaft noise remains.. also during turns the whole 4wd system seems to bind up at less than 3/4 turn and worsens if you try to turn more.... I looked at the shaft that goes into the cv shaft and diff. when i changed the left side and it looked heat tempered purple blue etc. may i have a bearing in the diff going out....I just bought the truck for 7000 and have 1000 plus in parts... to repair things ... just getting frustrated... if i can't find a solution due you know of a place that would trade my truck and not cutt my throat in loss... Hope you could help me concerned owner...thanks and thank god for guys like yourselves.... Anthony

I have a 2003 Durango with LS rear end. I bought this vehicle new. I have 33000 miles on it. as I type this message my Durango is at the dealer waiting for parts. the differential is shot! everthing has to be replaced including the housing.I heard the WHOOPING sound backing out of my driveway and tight corners. luckily this will only cost 100.00 bucks due to powertrain warranty. I am worried about the future with this vehicle as the mileage increases. I am a big Dodge fan and have owned other Chrysler products. I hope they get this figured out or I may go with an import next time even though this goes against my beleifs.

I had Mike of Kraft Auto repair in Berkley Illinois supposedly repair the 3.55 rearend on my 99 Dakota ext cab 4x4 5.2 auto. He had the truck for over a year and when I picked it up for the 3rd time he said it was fine turns out I didn't make it 20 miles to the house Mike the owner then said the warranty was up. I don't do illegal things but I contemplated some then I decided he will reap what he sows The big guy takes care of revenge stuff and I'm still out $800....So avoid this dirtbag!

hey i have a annoying squeking noise coming from my reare left tire. I believe its the hub assembly but just cant seem to find the whole thing for sale. i see the reare wheel bearings and from what ive read you need to take off the differential to install. I dont understand what the dif. cover has to do with a noise in the reare wheel?
