Message: the other day my gas gauge on my 98 Durango went to empty and my low gas alarm came on...when I my tank was actually 1/2 full. This happened twice, for only a few seconds each time before returning to normal. What can cause this and can I fix it avoiding the dealer if it occurs again?

Two weeks ago, my fuel gauge went dead, just as I was about to take my car in for warped pads and brake replaced, including high rev on idle.Dealer called saying the car needed tuneup which included new plugs.Declined 800 dollar repair bill to replace supposed bad fuel gauge sensor on the fuel tank but paid $380 for the brakes and tune . 4days later car started running rough, took back to dealer...diagnose..Fuel tank peeling from inside, injector lines and injectors are blocked total repair 2000 dollars..my response they can keep it...
