Message: I was wondering if there was any recalls for an evaperator problem for a 2000 Dakota. Mine must have a leak or something wrong with it because I am getting hot air instead of cold air.

Message: When Dodge went to the new AC units running the new R134, the AC oil they use became a problem. Apparently it is somewhat corrosive and in my case it ate through the bottom of the evaporator core. Sounds like you have had the same problem i had. Expect to pay between $500 and $1000 depending on who you get to do replace it. The evaporator is a $280 item from the dealer, I have seen it for $235 online + shipping. If you decide to do it yourself then get a service manual on your truck and READ up on puling the dash and replacing the item. The dash is bulky so have a friend on deck waiting at your side to help you. The dash is pretty straightr forward to remove. Other than about 3-4 grounds screwed to the firewall or cabsides, everything else in the wiring harness is plugs that only fit in one place. You will have to drop the steering column to pull the dash and make sure you disable your air bags by pulling the fuses on your fuse block on dash just inside drivers door. I pull neg battery cable also.
If you seriously think about doing the job yourself, email me and I''ll photocopy the pages in the manual I referred to most on doing the job and mail them to you.
