i have an 02, and it made clunking from column. Turns out there was a bad clockspring, so i got a new column, problem was still there so i eventually ended up getting a new coupler shaft and intermediary shaft, umm or sometin like dat. Problem is gone

I have a 98 Dak with 145,000 miles on it. It's never been beat, but I've run into almost every possible part that can wear out in normal use. My bet is your trouble is that intermediate shaft. They don't give it away, either!
Good luck.

I drive a '97, SLT, automatic, with the V6, and mine makes a rattling, clunking noise whenever I'm stopped and turning the wheel, but otherwise does not make the sound while moving. I am not terribly mechanically inclined, and so cannot diagnose the problem myself, but am unsure whether or not to take it to my mechanic (I'm unemployed and a student, so money is tight even though I'm living at home).

Has anyone else encountered this same problem (it sounds like a few of you have seen something similar, but I could not confirm from your posts if it was an identical problem), and did it turn out to be something serious, or simply cosmetic? I don't terribly mind the sound, but it does cause me worry, and does make my truck sound a bit cruddy (something which does hurt my pride a wee bit), and otherwise is something I could live with a while longer until I have more money to spend.

If it turns out to be urgent, I could swing a few things, and get it fixed, but as I said, I've no need to spend money that I really shouldn't.

This is a common problem is most dakotas. Mine personally has the same, and i can't be bothered to fix it. Chrysler has a TSB on this i believe. It is a popping/cracking noise coming from the column, and this is due to some bolts being loose underneath the steering wheel (I can't really remember what it was exactly). Regardless, it is not a big deal, just an annoyance

I just looked up the bulletin just now. This bulletin involves repositioning the steering column on the steering column mounting brackets. The problem is that it just gets out of alignment. The bulletin says to loosen the 4 nuts, bounce the steering wheel to normalize alignment, then tighten. As I put in brackets in my previous post I was not sure exactly what it was. Therefore I looked it up just now (at work) and found the bulletin.
