Message: That's the clutches in your rear end. Go to the auto store and ask for modifier. It's an additive for noisy rearends and costs about $6. Drain your old gear oil and add new along with the modifier. Find an open area and drive in figure eights. This will work the new oil throughout the clutches and axles. Within a few minutes, the noise should go away. I had the same problem and my mechanic told me to try this and it worked. My rearend was clanking and vibrating hard when turning. I didn't really notice anything when driving straight. Anyway mine is as quiet as new now. Good luck!

Message: Get it checked. Dakota's have a real problem with the differential. Mine was just making a small whooping in the truns and I took it in to get the diff oil changed and they told me it was shot. I have heard many stories on here about the rear end locking up. Be safe and have it checked. Don't want it locking up at 75mph with a 18 wheeler on you hind end.

Message: I have a 2002 Dakota 4X4, 4.7L,90K miles with an anti-spin rear. The inner tire was squeeling on a trun. I had the dealer replace fluid and problem went away. The dealer said a keeper clip had come off a clutch ring, there were stil two or three remaining so the rear should be O.K. for a while. That was 50K miles ago. Now after the truck travels for a couple of miles when I stop I hear a metalic click or snap, it sounds like it is coming from the rear diff? Other than that the rear seems to work fine..... I have checked everything on the rear of the truck breaks, springs, tortion bar, etc. Do the clutch discs on an anti-spin rear lock up when driving then release when the truck stops???? Is that the noise I hear the discs releasing with no clips to stop them?????
