not necessary, i have a flowmaster 40 in my stock exhaust and i get a lot of compliments on it...if you want MAJOR sound, like attracting cops whenever youre in the city, hollow the cats and run straight pipes..thatll work

In regards to your ? i have done many things to get my truck to sound as sweet sounding as possible.. what i did was first i bought the 40 series flow master muffler with turn downs(on stock exhaust pipes) then.. later i installed cut-outs. which for me being 20.. I love being able to pull the cut outs and have it go straight exhaust!! so thats MY 2 cents for ya
