Message: I have had a similar problem. Another little thing I noticed since we got ours is that when backing up a hill (slight incline) and turning left or right the tranny makes some strange grinding type sounds. Almost like a really loud clicking. We already took it in once and had the tranny serviced for this. It's going in again next week. Hopefully they will just pull and replace the damn tranny this time.

Message: We took our dodge in on monday and got it back monday night. Check this out. The reason for the problem we were having was because of a couple loose bolts leaking oil into the transmission. The rattling / grinding sound was actually the dipstick tube smacking against the two loose bolts.
They drained the fluid and replaced it, tightened back down the flange and surprise surprise no more grinding/chattering from the transfercase/or transmission. :)
I did a happy dance monday night.
