Subject: TSB for Front Drive Shaft CV Joints

Help. I need to find out where I can get my hands on a service bulletin pertaining to problems with the front drive shaft CV joint boot on the 2001 (and possibly other years) 4WD Dakota QC. I just spent $800.00 US to get the drive shaft and front output bearing replaced, because the CV boot broke at the front, all the grease leaked out, the CV failed and took the front output bearing with it. The failure had to have happend long ago, for there is no trace of grease on the CV boot nor on the transfer case. The only way you know it's bad it when you put the truck in 4WD. Then it sounds like griding metal or marbles in the transfer case. My truck has 42,000 miles on it, but I'm convinced that it failed well before that.

When I had the 30,000 mile service on the truck, the Tech should have checked it out, but considering the screwing I got then, I doubt that he did much of anything.

See this thread: http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/dea/284.html

I'm trying to get the dealer to pick up the tab for the repair, and if I can produce that document, and the date is before I took it in for the 30K mile service, it will give me that much more leverage for my arguement.

For everyone else with 4WD, crawl under the truck and check out the front drive shaft. Mine had excessive radial play and could also be moved up and down, side to side. Also make sure that the CV boot has not broken.

Don't let this happen to you. Check it out before your warranty expires. Remember, you only know you have a problem when it is in 4WD. Sounds worse in reverse.

Thanks for the help.

nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems has recall information for free.

alldatadiy.com has a more comprehensive listing, but you'll have to pay for it. It think it's 24.95 for a one-year account. Lotsa luck.

Sounds like you are a beaner. Don't know what else to tell you except you should have bought a ford.

Any make or model can be a lemon or a gem. I've had cars and trucks from all major manufacturers and years. And yes, I was even a Ford man for most of my life until I found out how expensive parts were as compared to Dodge or GM. As for the "beaner" comment, I would just consider the source.
