Subject: Dakota won't run
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi fellas. My 93 dakota quit running. I got in to start it and it sputtered a little then that was it. I checked for spark, got it, so I yanked the fuel pump assembly and put a new one in and still nothing. I should've checked for power to the pump before I replaced it but I didn't. I replaced my fuel pump relays & my auto shutdown relay. My repair manual says somthing about the auto shutdown relay needing a tachometer signal from the distributor, whatever that means. I'm thinking maybe the PCM has problems, but I don't know. I'm goingh to probably take it to the garage, but I wanted to check here and see if anyone has had the same problem.

crankshaft position sensor

on the right side of the truck ,on the trans bellhouse bellow the intake is where youll find it
has 2 bolts that youll need a hex key to remove .
unplug the sensor, using an ohm meter set at the 1K-10Kscale, measure for resistance across terminals B&C. B is the center one,C IS THE ONE CLOSEST TO THE SLOT on the inside of the connector
if you measure any resistance replace it.

the fact that you have spark is an indicator that the camshaft position sensor is good

Check the splices in the wireing harness under the washer bottle and the one under the fuse box, under the hood. it is wrapped with the black tape....mine was the same way... it turned out it was where 3 wires are solderd to one red wire that runs in the harness to the firewall over to the PCM. it is the PCM direct power wire from the battery.

chect that before you replace the cranck sensor....

Stacy, it sounds like your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve has quit on you. have someone start it, and lightly press and realese the acellerator. the little plunger should move slightly (as it trys to regulate the return to idle) its in the back side of the throttle bodie, you can see it from the rear top.. it may just need a good cleaning

if the IAC is bad, you can drill out the idle adjusting cap ( on the linkage side, you cant miss it. its a recessed metal cap) and using a torx T-25 bit adjust the idle up high enough where the engine won't stall (tempoary fix...) that should get ya' home.. then you can replace the IAC motor (if that does turn out to be the problem..)

Dodge Dakota - check engine light comes on intermittently. It would not start to come inside the shop. Waited a while and it started - seemed like wire going to computer??? Is there some problem that anyone knows of? Need suggestions. Thank you.

Did it again a week ago, wouldn't start when I got off work and same no bus code in odometer area. Towed to dealer, started and no codes stored...no diagnosis. Wouldn't start again this morning. Dealer said check battery...battery good and so is charging system. It is getting pretty cold up here and I don't want to get stranded...ideas???

It was running, I parked it, now it wont start.
Everything is dead - no dome light - no headlights- electric door locks wont work -dead
Battery is good/charged .Only the flashers will work!!!!
Heres how to resolve it.
Use the key and lock the driver side door. Use the key to unlock the drivers door.
Now try your headlights - if they work then the truck will start.
Must be some kind of alarm system built in - locking and unlocking the drivers door is the SECRET reset!!!

Sorry to hijack the thread.

chris,

"the fact that you have spark is an indicator that the camshaft position sensor is good"

Does this hold true for the 4.7L?

I'm not getting any spark, and chasing my tail here.

Engine in 92 v6 a/t fwd was replaced in '04 with '00 engine by certified Dodge tech. Top end of my '92 was reused so ECM would work. Had excellent oil pressure, but within minutes after starting the oil pressure guage quit working. 2 days later, truck suddenly quit shortly after starting home from church, then restarted after a few minutes. These sudden quits, just like turning off key, continued, sometimes restarting immediately (usually after quitting at hwy speed, by shifting to neutral to restart), sometimes after a few minutes. As time passed, I discovered that when it wouldn't restart the CHECK ENGINE lgt. was not coming on when I turned the key off and back on, so I developed the routine of turning the key off and on repeatedly until the lgt. comes on, then it always started. About a year ago the tach needle started going up to about 4000 sometimes when the lgt. didn't come on. This spring it got worse then quit altogether, with the tach needle going to 6000. I have replaced the camshaft position sensor and checked extensive wiring. The tech replaced the ignition switch. I replaced the computer, and now the check engine lgt. comes on, but it still won't start. The Auto shutdown relay and fuel pump relay have power from the switch and continuity to the ECM connector pin 51, but apparently no continuity through ECM to ground. I do't have access to the ECM software logic, so I don't know what inputs control the logic. The tech is gone, so I'm on my own with a partially disabled brain and a totally disabled truck. HELP!

I have a 94 Dakota 3.9L that sat for a year has no spark and the fuel pump will only come on when you run a jumper wire to were the fuel pump relay goes in the fuse box. Replaced pickup coil, ignition coil, crank sensor, distributor cap, rotor button, checked fusible links under washer bottle, checked continuity from coil to computer I saw in your ads on this site about the red wire under the fuse box were three wires are sodered together and red wire goes battery power to computer I'm going to check that next I just don't get my hopes up cause I've spent to much money already and I'm frustrated with it! still won't start. Please help. Thank you
